Why is Barney’s selling Target’s Rogan Line this weekend?

07_targetbarneys_lg.jpg

Rogan Gregory gets his fame for designing fabulous jeans that fit like a dream, that are also eco-friendly.  The fashion community is in an uproar now about Barney’s selling Rogans upcoming line for Target’s Go International line this weekend.  The line is set to hit Target stores May 15th.  Rogan is a former GAP designer, who also has other labels such as Edun, run with Bono’s wife, Ali Hewson; Loomstate - an all organic line of shirts and denim; and his own line - Rogan.  You can find a sneak peek at what some of the Go International pieces for Target will look like here.

ROGAN - WOMEN - DENIM - Jeans

From Friday through Sunday, you can buy Rogan’s collection for Target at Barneys before it goes on sale at Target. Budget shoppers might rejoice at the prospect of being able to afford merchandise at Barneys. But the partnership has created a spell of befuddlement among retail experts who just don’t understand why Barneys wants to confuse its customers by selling cheapie stuff. Barneys currently offers Rogan’s regular line, which includes $230 pants and $320 dresses. “When you have $29 jeans and $250 jeans from the same designer, consumers will start to ask, ‘Is that fabric really worth ten times more than the other fabric?’” one expert said. Call us crazy, but we really doubt the typical Barneys shopper will see cheap clothing in their fancy terrain and regret purchasing all those other designer pieces. Assuming they never had really bad taste, that is.

So why is Barneys doing it? First, the store’s fashion director, Julie Gilhart, wanted more ecofriendly products, like Rogan’s Target line, in the store and was reportedly instrumental in getting Rogan’s Target line off the ground. Considering she’s so passionate about it, why shouldn’t she have the line she helped create in her stomping grounds just because it’s inexpensive? Second, many blog posts like this one will be written about this weekend’s event. (Not to mention we just read a six-page article about it in WWD.) You know what that is, retail experts? It’s called buzz, and it’s ringing off the chain for Barneys right now.

So try not to worry so much about this stuff next time. It’s bad for the skin.

What do you think about Barney’s carrying Rogan’s Target line?  It begs the question, if Rogan can design the same great fitting jeans for $29, that normally sell for $250 at Barneys - do designer jeans really cost designers that much to make, or are we all getting ripped off when we pay higher prices because we believe it means higher quality?

More designer denim brands coming out with shorter inseams!

7-dojo-petite-jeans.jpg

We’ve always loved that Diesel (carries inseams at 30″, 32″ and 34″) and Joe’s Jeans (the Provocateur style) carried shorter inseams for those of us who are not of supermodel stature.  But now, increasingly, 7 for All Mankind is offering jeans with shorter inseams as well.  Finally!  ShopBop has an entire category dedicated to Jeans for Petites.  I am 5′7″ - so not exactly petite, but my legs are not super long either.  I have to hem all my jeans that are 34″ and longer so I would buy the 7 for All Mankind Jeans that have a 32″ inseam which would be perfect on me.  I have a feeling many girls are like me - not short but not super tall either, and could wear these that have 32″ inseams.   Love!

Would you buy petite or shorter length jeans?

RevolveClothing.com calls itself the “best designer denim selection in the world”.  Agreed.  They have every major brand we could want, plus many smaller ones and unknowns that have killer denim as well.  This is exciting - we can only hope that the in-store selection is as good as the website!  You lucky California people you!  Hope the store does well and they expand into other states as well!

E-commerce Store to Watch:
Revolve Clothing

Few independent e-commerce stores offer the volume of brands to earn the title of emporium, but La Mirada, Calif.–based RevolveClothingcarries more than 400 labels. That’s a number that approaches the depth and breadth of e-commerce sites operated by department stores.

By fall 2008, RevolveClothing will open a bricks-and-mortar store that will serve as an edited version of its Web site, according to co-owner Michael Mente. Located at 8452 Melrose Ave. in West Hollywood, Calif., the two-story boutique will focus on different themes such as eco fashion, Mente said.

The 5-year-old retailer also will continue its focus on new and emerging designers. RevolveClothing offers California fashion labels including Anzevino & Florence, Corey Lynn Calter and Orthodoxalong with designers such as Catherine Malandrino and popular brands such as Ed Hardy. The retailer’s will to take a risk on so many new designers is increasingly rare, said Eric Niccoli, creative director of Los Angeles–based Orthodox.
“They have a comfort with risk,” Niccoli said. “They just go for it.”

The benefits of launching new labels do not always come immediately, however. “Sometimes we’re nervous about it,” Mente said. “But when they do well, it’s really fulfilling.”

EXCLUSIVE: Paige Premium Denim introduces Paige Black Label!

paige-black-label.jpg

DenimBlog.com has learned that Designer Paige Adams-Geller is introducing Paige Black Label! Check out the announcement below and some exclusive photos of the new line!

In an unprecedented move from denim to luxury, designer Paige Adams-Geller introduces Paige Black Label – a collection defined by its sexy attitude and European esthetics. Luxurious fabrics, perfectly tailored fits and fabulous silhouettes are the foundation of this couture inspired line. Filling a need for edgy but sophisticated designs for women, Paige Black Label focuses on modified classics that transcend the seasons. Paige Black Label debuts in U.S. stores (the likes of Stanley Korshak, Ron Herman, Cusp, Champagne, and Henri Bendel) in August of 2008 - and is carried by the prestigious findings showroom, with offices in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and Atlanta.

“Paige has such a reputation for fit, that to expand on fit outside of the denim arena made perfect sense,” explains findings owner, Deirdre Roffoni. “This means retailers can trust Black Label with confidence – knowing there will be no learning curve with this line.”

For the Fall debut Paige Black Label uses the finest in Italian and Turkish textiles, boasting a full collection of skirts, trousers, dresses, vests and jackets – all augmented by leather details, diagonal zippers and delicately placed seams. The collection focuses more on design than color – offering an elegant, detail oriented range that is available in timeless hues of navy, tan, grey and black.

Paige Black Label combines beauty and brains,” says Paige. “You’ll find timeless pieces with a whispered sex appeal. This is for the power player that never forgets her femininity.”

Future collections will expand to become a full range line – including beautifully constructed tops. Paige Black Label ranges from $230 to $1000 retail.
