Celebs in Denim: Charlize Theron in J Brand

Last Wednesday actress Charlize Theron wore a pair of J BRAND “912” jeans in Black while at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival

Embellished Denim: So Over?

There’s an interesting article in this month’s Details magazine we laughed at and thought we’d share. Are embellished jeans, like, so 2007 and over? Or do you still rock your crystallized and embellished denim in 2008?

The torn knees, the bleached thighs, even the girlishly embroidered back pockets—those could have been predicted. But no one saw this coming: At the Country Music Awards a few years ago, the person in the most jaw-droppingly ornamented denim outfit—the country-western equivalent of Louis XIV’s brocaded finest—wasn’t Dolly Parton, it was Keith Urban. Granted, it was the Country Music Awards, where the red carpet isn’t exactly a parade of Jil Sander minimalism, but Urban’s clingy jeans, covered with doily-like embroidery, represented a tipping point.

The denim offensive, which began in the late nineties and, according to the 2006 book Jeans: A Cultural History of an American Icon, saw almost 800 brands on the market by 2004, seems to have broken down the barrier between men’s and women’s denim.

“Jeans were designed to be tough and rugged—the epitome of cool,” says Scott Morrison, the founder of Earnest Sewn. “They’re not supposed to emanate femininity.”

Urban’s dolled-up Wranglers were only the beginning of the bastardization. Criss Angel and Dave Navarro have since shown up for events wearing jeans more elaborately decorated than a third-grade girl’s jazz-recital costume. Kevin Federline and Justin Timberlake haven’t taken it that far, but they’ve flirted with the look, wearing jeans with appliqued back pockets and airbrush-style bleaching.

“It’s very L.A.,” says Simon Miller, who started a line of men’s jeans last year. “It’s also kind of Dallas. Big hair, big heels, outrageous jeans. It’s like when women try to outdo each other by wearing the most jewelry.”

The men who made jeans an American icon wouldn’t have been caught dead using denim fit for a Vegas showgirl to prove their potency. The laborers whom Levi’s made the prototypical pair for in 1873. James Dean, who wore his out on the seat of a motorcycle. The Marlboro Man, whose jeans’ only unnatural adornment was the worn spot from a pack of Reds. For guys like that, being a bad-ass wouldn’t have involved wearing jeans adorned with embroidered Gothic crosses—getting tattoos of them would have been enough.

Rock & Republic doing too much, too fast?

From the Fashion Investor blog, we spotted this today. Do you think this is true or hearsay? And are denim brands like Rock & Republic better off sticking to denim, what they know, instead of trying to expand too quickly? It’s funny that they mention True Religion, because they have also been venturing into handbags, swimwear, etc. recently themselves…

The buzz about Sundance this past week has been about the state of some popular contemporary denim brands. I’m not even remotely a fan of True Religion, one of the sponsors of a swag suite at the festival, but the brand has generally been successfully in selling their core product - upscale denim with new, on-trend variations every six months or so. The gossip around Sundance has been focused on how Rock & Republic has been faring. While their core product is also upscale, on-trend denim, they have been trying to expand into areas with limited success that has allegedly cut dramatically into their cash flow. With handbag prices reaching $950 and shoes reaching $395, and sunglasses like those pictured above for $350, Rock & Republic is pricing the brand much higher than others in the same contemporary market, including L.A.M.B. and Botkier, among others. Project Runway’s Denim Challenge!

Last night’s Project Runway episode featured a challenge involving denim!  The designers were presented with more than 500 pairs of Levi’s 501 jeans in a variety of sizes and colors, and one-yard bolts of white cotton.  The challenge: To create an iconic denim look of their choice that captures the spirit of originality and creativity of the 501 legacy. The winning look will be sold as a limited edition on the Levis.com.  How cool is that for an aspiring designer?  Designer Ricky was the winner (photo above of his creation) and below are some of the looks the other designers came up with.

Have you got some denim designs in your head?  Check out Levi’s Project 501 Contest where you can create your own denim masterpiece!

Celebs in Denim: Paris Hilton in Rich & Skinny jeans

At the Sundance Film Festival, reporters caught up with Paris Hilton this week to get her comments on her friend, Britney Spears, pictured with her here about a year ago. Paris was quoted as saying of Britney:

“She’s such a sweet girl when I’m alone with her, she’s a completely different person than she’s made out to be and I love her, I think she’s very sweet and has a big heart. She’s amazing. I just want her to be happy. I think everything’s going to be OK.” Source

Could we not see where Britney was heading based on these photos alone? Paris is practically holding her up! At least Paris looks hot in her Rich & Skinny jeans.
