We found this list of Best and Worst Trends of 2007 on SignsOnSanDiego.com - do you agree or disagree with the assessment of skinny jeans & ballet flats? We think its a cute look, but agree that only thinner girls can pull it off. And is it just us, or what the heck are they talking about with the long gloves thing - did we just miss that trend, we haven’t seen in our neck of the woods!
Fashion-wise, 2007 experienced some hits and some misses. Here are a handful of styles that made the list.
WOMEN
Best
Fun, flirty dresses: Lauren Conrad, fashion designer and star of MTV reality show “The Hills,” helped bring dresses back into the fashion forefront. Not only did she wear them in nearly every episode, she even filled her clothing line — Lauren Conrad — with above-the-knee kimono-style and A-line shifts. They make the “Best” list for their ultra-feminine style.Belted trench coats: Classic sophistication with modern appeal — who could say no to that? The coats were not only functional, the nip at the waist complemented curvier figures such as “the hourglass.” Celebs who repeatedly end up on the fashion A-list — Jessica Biel, Katie Holmes and Jessica Alba — looked fabulous wearing their belted trench coats this year.
Opera-length gloves: These formal gloves that reach above the elbow struck up visions of Rita Hayworth in “Gilda” (1946) and Marilyn Monroe in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” (1953), and that was a good thing.
Worst
Skinny jeans and ballet flats: Fashion should flatter the figure, not take away from it. This combo did the latter. What was sad was that the masses were wearing this style when only a small sect of the female population could actually pull off skinny jeans. That sect? Very tall and very thin women. The average woman who wears a size 12 shouldn’t have worn these pants because, in doing so, she did her figure a disservice. Because skinny jeans cut off right at the ankles, they make the legs appear shorter than they actually are. And because they cling to the rear, they make it look larger. Since ballet flats don’t offer any sort of height support, they act as accomplices in the crimes that skinny jeans commit.
Booties: Booties, which are typically worn with skirts and dresses, cover up the thinnest part of a woman’s leg — the ankles. They basically cause the same problems as skinny jeans, only in the reverse. Here’s to hoping they flee the fashion world in 2008.
High-waisted pants: The massive amount of fabric that extends from the crotch up beyond the belly button results in an unflattering optical illusion. These pants should have come with a warning label that read, “When wearing, derrieres may appear larger than they really are.” No, thank you.
MEN
Best
Driver and ivy caps: These houndstooth and herringbone toppers were a nice throwback to the city newsboys of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and a fashionable addition to the classic clothing combination of cardigan and cords. The “complete” look: Joel McHale, the host of E!’s “The Soup,” got this look down. He’s known for sporting an oxford shirt, tie, sweater, blazer and designer jeans getup while getting paid to make fun of celebrities every Friday night at 10 (your welcome for the plug, McHale). The look was refined, stylish, modern and undoubtedly masculine.
Square toes: They were a nice change from round and pointy toes, and they gave any standard jeans and T-shirt ensemble a splash of edginess.
Worst
Mismatched patterns and fabrics: Being too matchy-matchy (i.e. wearing a plaid shirt with plaid shoes) is not a good thing. Being too mismatched is even worse. Leopard print and stripes are not simpatico. And, polyvinyl and cashmere do not belong together under any circumstance — not even the bleakest of laundry days! The reason why mismatched patterns and fabrics took the runways by storm this year is still TBD.Skintight skinny jeans: You know those vacuum packaging machines that are advertised on infomercials? The meat comes out shrink wrapped in a piece of plastic. The way that meat looks is how men who wore these jeans looked — like they’d been shoved into a piece of material that was way too small. The result was this awkward outline of body parts that should never be revealed through a man’s clothing.
Skulls on T-shirts: The problem with emblematic shirts is that they quickly become overplayed. Skulls were no exception.

I disagree with the skinny jeans and ballet flat trend being one of the worst. I am not tiny like some girls but skinny jeans elongated my figure and I like that I can tuck skinny jeans into boots.
I also loved ballet flats because I personally hate wearing heels and the shoes still looked dressy. But I am also not insecure about my short height of 5′3-5′4 like some people might be.
yea i thought ballet flats were on the up and up. suprised to see them on a worst list.
I def think ballet flats are gorgeous
and skinny jeans I hope will be around for a while becuase I’m really into them right now and i think if you have the right shape they’re quite sexy!
and I am sorry but I almost want to disregard this entire best and worst list due to the fact that they siad Lauren Conrad brough fun flirty dresses to the forefront of fashion… i’m sorry but this is not true… and her stuff is overpriced for what you get everything is spandex and rayon.
I just don’t agree…
but it’s def an interesting post thanks a ton
it’s always interesting to hear what pop culture has to say about fashion.
and when were mismatched patterns EVERY popular?
whoever wears animal print and plaid and w/e busy print all at once clearly needs to rethink their style either that or they must pull of one HELL of a look that i’ve yet to see
I’m also suprised that high waisted skirst didn’t appear on the list… I find them very chic and although I’m not a fan of high waisted denim a high waisted pencil skirt is as classy as it gets
Square toed shoes are definitely not good, I’ve been converting from all the square toed dress shoes I bought 7 years ago. You still see them on clearance racks and at places like Winners all the time.
How did UGG and Croc not make worst?
Square toed dress shoes? They’re cheap Kenneth Cole plastic-leather shit. How did this get mentioned as a “trend?” Most high end designers don’t really even make them.
^ YES avatar! thank you
at least uggs keep you warm like big slippers why do people sitll wear those UGLY CROCS though GRrrr….
ewe!
