Top 10 Most Expensive Jeans

When you think of Haute Couture, you probably don’t think of faded denim. But in fact, the latest crop of designer jeans comes in a variety of custom-made options decked with rich embellishments, from embroidery to platinum rivets to precious diamonds accents. And the prices are just as extravagant, with some pairs costing as much as a luxury car or even more. Not all denim is created equal. When the price tag is sky high, you can expect the finest materials, including the best weaves, rarest batches of fabric and lots of hand-work and details that you won’t find in more mass produced clothing. And when the budget is unlimited, there are many fresh and eye-catching options to choose from. In addition, while style is important, so is fit. That’s why the best pairs of jeans are cut, finished and accented in all of the right places to enhance the wearer’s shape.  Just keep in mind that not every buyer thinks newer is better. In fast, some prefer to stick with the real tried and true styles. That’s why several items on this list are either distressed or, in the case of number 9, date very, very far back in time.

10. Levi Strauss & Co.

The name Levi Strauss & Co. may conjure up images of basic, practical jeans, but the well-known company has recently taken its reputation up to new heights with the introduction of its premium denim. Called the Levi Capitol E jean, these high-end pants are sewn by hand out of high-quality denim and it can take as many as 30 people from start to finish to craft just one pair. Such intensive workmanship doesn’t come cheap. In fact, the most expensive cuts of these jeans sell for as high as $500 a pair and no two are exactly alike. (And it’s interesting to note that these actually aren’t even close to the most expensive Levi’s out there. See number 9 on this list for more about noteworthy Levi sales.)

9.  7 For All Mankind

The popular 7 For All Mankind brand has become known for its high quality fabric and exceptional cut. Pairs start at a few hundred dollars and are readily available at better department stores in a variety of colors, weaves and styles. The top of the line pairs can run as high as almost $1,000, and some fans of this line swear that the cut gives the illusion of thinner legs and leaner thighs, which just may make it a worthy buy. (DenimBlog editor’s note: I’ve never seen a pair of $1,000 Seven jeans, have you?!)

8.  Earnest Sewn

Top Ten Most Expensive Jeans

Imagine having a pair of jeans made for your exact measurements and taste. That’s the lure of the Earnest Sewn Custom Fit Jeans, which are a hit among fashion lovers who demand a perfect fit. These jeans are also made from rare batches of fine hand-dyed denim, making them unique. When you order a pair, they are made to perfectly fit your individual size and body shape. In addition, you can select the details that you would like to add, such as rivet material and size. The cost for such a customized style is about $1,000.

7. Roberto Cavalli

If bling is your thing, then consider the bejeweled premium denim jeans offered by Roberto Cavalli. This is a favorite among celebrities and fashion insiders, including Jennifer Lopez, who is known for her cutting-edge style. The well-dressed cast of Sex in the City have also been known to wear the Cavalli clothing line. You can find these extravagant jeans at high-end department stores, or at the Roberto Cavalli boutique on Madison Avenue in New York City. A pair will cost you close to $1,200.

6. Dolce & Gabbana

The Italian design team of Dolce & Gabbana has an excellent track record for designing beautiful clothes for some of the best-dressed women. Therefore it should come as no surprise that they’ve captured a piece of the high-end jean market. Their take on this item is a distressed faded denim with an embroidered butterfly design. The finishing touch is an elegant gold D&G logo centered on a pink leather patch that decorates the back pocket and let’s people know who is the creator behind this attractive and eye-catching design. The price for a pair is just under $1,200 and this unique item is in limited supply, resulting in a waiting list worldwide.

5. APO Jeans

Top Ten Most Expensive Jeans

Do you prefer silver, gold or platinum hardware? When you select APO Jeans custom denim, you can choose rivets made from any of these three metals and can even opt for real diamonds in the place of a regular button. Further, the pockets are lined in pure silk and the zipper is polished and plated to perfection. Of course such luxurious details, in addition to the finest denim, doesn’t come cheap. APO considers its premium denim and detailing “cream of the crop,” and charges accordingly. In fact, the price tag for this product with all of the bells and whistles is $4,000. But in return, you receive a written appraisal from a prestigious New York City jeweler so you can protect your investment.

4.  Gucci

There is an elegance and timelessness that is conveyed by anything Gucci. This premise holds true even when the item in question comes tattered and ripped. At least that’s the idea behind the Gucci Genius jeans, which were made from a pair of regular jeans that were specially treated and torn to make them look old and worn. Then the jeans were covered with African beading, feathers and buttons to give them a unique look. The finished product, which was unveiled on the Milan back in 1998, was priced at just a bit more than $3,100, earning it a mention in Guinness World Records. (Today this would be equal to just over $4,000.)

3. Escada

Do you like to be the center of attention? If so, then consider luxe designer Escada’s version of the custom jean, which lets the buyers select any details and styling their hearts desire. The finished item is priced accordingly. Some fans of this jean really exercise their creativity, adding a range of embellishments worthy of a princess or queen. The most expensive custom pair to date was decked in Swarovski crystals. The price for this indulgence was $10,000.

2.  Levi Strauss & Co.

Top Ten Most Expensive Jeans

While most of the jeans on this list are new, the ones that hold the number two spot are a pair that is actually very, very old. These jeans are a pair of original Levi Strauss & Co. that date back to the 1880s and lots of history is captured within the weave of its vintage fabric. These jeans, which are an original example of the Levi 501 style, sold at auction on eBay in 2005 for a shocking $60,000. This translates today to more than $65,000. The winner was a Japanese collector who asked to remain anonymous.

While this is a record-breaking Levi sale, there are two others that are worth mentioning here. The first was a pair of Levi’s also from the late 1800s that were bought by Levi Strauss & Co. in 2001 for about $46,000 (today this equals more than $55,000). In addition, a recent EBay auction for a pair of Levis more than century old that were found in a California goldmine sold for more than $36,000.

1.  Secret Circus

And the winner for the most expensive jeans is . . . an unusual pair that is designed by a new company called Secret Circus. The creators are banking on the idea that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, no matter whether you wear them around your neck or on your back pocket instead. That’s why they included a design made from a large collection of high-quality (and substantially-sized) diamonds on their pants. Rumor has it that the first pair was sold for a shocking $1.3 million.

Premium Denim hits NYC with force with new Flagship stores!

7forallmankind.jpg

Is it really over? I keep hearing premium denim is over and trends have changed.  Actually my inbox is SCREAMING with it!  And with the resurgence of Levi’s jeans…but even those have gone up to $200 in my local mall.  I just don’t believe that premium denim is as over as some say - especially after reading this!

Just when you thought it was safe to slip back into those GAP regular fits, designer denim brands like 7 For All Mankind and True Religion make another lunge at your wardrobe with a whole new game plan. From huge leases for new flagships to hot collaborations with haute fashion houses, premium jean companies are determined to claw their way back onto the bums of New Yorkers.

True Religion is banking on a full scale Manhattan invasion to push their $200 pairs. With the first open already and the latter two expected within two months, you know True Religion is praying for new converts to the church of high denim.

7 For All Mankind is scooting its new 3,000 square foot flagship into Soho. Although the store won’t be peddling its $180 jeans and $350 bags (!!) until later this summer, it will be only a block down from a few other places we’d rather buy jeans: Jean Shop, DKNY and Emporio Armani(Editor’s Note: WE at the DenimBlog would not rather by jeans at DKNY than SFAM!)

Don’t let their spring obsession with the 80’s party look throw you off, Diesel means big business. By Christmas this year, the 19,555 square foot former home of Gucci will welcome the behemoth Diesel flagship location. The three-floor shrine to denim will be the perfect host for Diesel’s recent collaboration with adidas Originals and Diesel’s own luxury line “Diesel Black Gold,” for fall debut.

Fresh from opening their first US store in partnership with Opening Ceremony Acne Jeans announces yet another huge collaboration- with Alber Elbaz of Lanvin & should be ready for a 2009 launch.”

Joining Lucky Brand, A.P.C. opened with a current kids clothes collaboration with Luco featuring $85 Bermuda shorts for your kid to grow out of just in time for the next collaboration.

The premium denim train makes all local stops from here to next year with an Earnest Sewn opening in LA in July.

Paige Premium Denim launching their Black Label in August 2008.

The dreaded Hollister mothership due to touch down in July 2009.  (Editor’s Note - HOLLISTER IS NOT PREMIUM DENIM!  HELLO?!?!)

And the freshly H&M-ed Cheap Monday shivering in anticipation of their own ambitious plans.

Despite the premium denim infestation, there is still no denying that the trends have shifted; now having the double R on your backside isn’t so much a status symbol as it is a suburban outlet shopper’s badge of honor.   Talking with WWD, Union’s Scott Bonomo only confirms this fact: “That [premium denim] gold rush is over. People that weren’t in this business for the long haul have found themselves out of it by choice or not by choice. It’s a different game. You’ve got to know who your customer is and know what you’re about as a concept.”

Story from Racked.com

For most of us, it was never about wearing a status symbol on our backsides (well maybe for a few of us!). But for most, its about the denim. The color of the wash, the uniqueness of the pockets, the durability, and most of all, how great it makes the booty look - the fit! If it was about the status symbol, we’d all be running around with Louis Vuitton jeans (yes there is such a thing - wait for the blog tomorrow!) on our arses like Mariah Carey!  In my opinion, great fitting premium denim is a long way from being over.

Blue Goes Green: Eco friendly denim!

earth.jpg

HAPPY EARTH DAY!

I’ll be the first one to admit that denim trends move so quickly that I can barely keep up at times.  This past year alone we’ve all experienced the skinny leg, the wide leg, high-waisted denim and even colored denim.  With all these crazy trends you can never be too sure what trends will have staying power.  So what’s a person to do?  No need to be blue, in honor of Earth Day today - why not go green?

Eco-Friendly denim is good for the environment for several reasons: it’s easier to dispose of when you want to get rid of your old denim, and the dyes are safer for the earth. During my quest to find environmentally conscience brands, I found this great guide about how to recycle your old denim.  Here are some truly amazing environmentally friendly brands that I want to share:

J Brand Green Label.  These jeans are not only environmentally friendly, but they come in a super cute organic tote bag. The bag features tips on how to live a more environmentally conscience lifestyle.  Sounds like a great idea, people need to how to change their lifestyles and not just what they wear.  J Brand Green Label Monroe jeans, $227 at Singer22

James Jeans’ use four eco-friendly denim techniques: they use only 100 percent organic cotton, organic dyes to color their jeans, natural latex to keep them waterproof, and organic olive leaf extract used during the finishing process.

Greencaste by Earnest Sewn is using techniques like air-drying jeans, replacing detergents with natural surfactants, and eliminating all resins from the 3-D finishing process.

Levi’s, Hollywood’s new ‘it’ jean, have come out with a new Eco line. Levi’s with the lowercase “e” are made from 100 percent organic cotton and recycled buttons, rivets, and zippers.

Has Paper Denim & Cloth gone under?

paperdenim.jpg

We got an email tip that Paper Denim & Cloth has gone under, and that several Paper Denim & Cloth employees and designers have told our source its true.  Can anyone confirm?  The site PaperDenim.com is down.  We will post if we get confirmation, but so far,  this seems to be pretty credible.  Interesting because Earnest Sewn was created by the same designer and founder as Paper Denim & Cloth, and Earnest Sewn just got a new financial backer and are set to expand…did they kill Paper Denim off in the process?

Earnest Sewn gets new financial backer, sets its sights to expand.

Interesting article from WWD.com.  Take note of the last sentence of this article - that is a pretty bold statement to make.  Do you think they can make it happen?

NEW YORK — Premium denim label Earnest Sewn is setting its sights on expansion after securing a new financial backer and putting together a management team.

An investment group led by Brian Cytrynbaum, owner of Majestic Mills, has made a “significant equity investment” in the brand and is looking to grow the wholesale business, expand product offerings and open signature stores at home and abroad. In 2007, Cytrynbaum’s investment group acquired a stake in Link Theory Holdings Co., owner of the Theory, Helmut Lang and Rosner labels.

Michael Press took over as president last week from founder and designer Scott Morrison. Press is a denim-industry veteran who was most recently vice president of sales at Paige Premium Denim. He began his career in 1987 at Diesel and has worked with brands such as Big Star and AG Adriano Goldschmied. Continue reading ‘Earnest Sewn gets new financial backer, sets its sights to expand.’

If you haven’t signed up for the Gilt Groupe yet, you need to!  You have to be a member to shop these sample sales.  Starting January 9th at 12pm, they are featuring Earnest Sewn jeans.  Your best bet is to get online early because the most popular sizes and styles will go fast!  More about Earnest Sewn…

Earnest Sewn Making Waves in the World of Denim

Arguably the best American denim line produced today, Earnest Sewn was launched by Scott Morrison (former co-founder and designer of Paper, Denim & Cloth), who today serves as the Founder, Creative Director and Head Designer. Morrison founded Earnest Sewn in response to the assembly line production dominating the denim market at that time. Morrison and his team revolutionized the world of denim by adopting the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, the Japanese design principle that translates as the ‘product sewn in earnest.’ Adherence to the Wabi-Sabi philosophy ensures that every pair of Earnest Sewn jeans is a unique—a priceless commodity and a “limited edition”. In fact Morrison literally signs off on each and every jean produced by Earnest Sewn (but you might need to search for it).

In fact we heard that fashionistas are scouring the globe for Earnest Sewn. It’s no wonder that these are the “go to jean” for Heidi Klum, Courtney Cox, Mischa Barton and, now through Gilt Groupe, YOU!
