Black Market Denim Party Sting: Why You Should Not Buy Fakes!

fake-jeans.jpg

You’ve got to watch this video - watch the whole thing, its about 4 and a half minutes long - and check out all the fake jeans these two were peddling from their home - over $300,000 worth!  This video also explains exactly why buying OR selling fake designer merchandise is bad for all of us.

Why buying/selling fakes is bad:

  • Selling fake jeans (or any fake goods) is illegal!
  • Buying fake goods is not illegal but that is being looked at as a possible new law so don’t buy them!
  • Buying fake good supports terrorism - and there is evidence selling fakes contributed to the funding of the 1993 World Trade Center bombings!
  • Buying fake goods supports child labor!
  • Buying or selling fake goods from China takes jobs away from Americans!
  • Wearing fake jeans is tacky! (Okay so I threw that last one in there!  But it’s true!)

Denim Do’s and Don’ts: A Guide for Jeans Shopping

diesel-louvely.jpg

Last night I was strolling around my local mall and decided to pop into the Diesel store and try a pair on.  Now normally I am a fan of Joe’s Jeans, Rock & Republics, and 7’s.  I’d not tried on many Diesels in the past and thought, what the heck, I had some time to kill.  Now bear in mind, normally I refuse to pay full priced for my designer denim.  I like the finer things like designer jeans, but I know I can find them cheaper on HonestMall.com or Ebay.  But I tried on several styles of Diesel and loved nearly all of them.  I ended up buying (at full retail price!) a pair of these Louvely’s - but after wearing them out last night they feel a bit more stretched and I think I may have to try to get them in one size smaller.  I should have read this guide first and bought them a bit too tight.   Here are some more tips for your next denim shopping trip!

How short should you hem your work/going-out jeans?
Always hem your jeans on the long side. Make sure that they are almost touching the ground with the highest pair of shoes you will wear with the jeans. This is because there is a shrink-factor over time. It is very subtle but one day you will look down and your going-out jeans will become your sneaker jeans. This is a natural progression, because the dark wash of a typical going-out jean fades over time and the hem comes up.

What about “sneaker” or “flip flop” jeans?
They should come close to the ground. Make sure you have one fold in the jean - the jean will fold up around your lower leg. This will help with long-term shrinkage and prevent the jean from dragging on the ground. Many of the denim manufacturers, like Diesels, Joe’s, Paige, Citizens and Seven, are offering a petite jean with a 30 or 31 inch inseam - perfect on a shorter girl with a heel and for a girl that is 5′4″-5′6″ it is a great sneaker jean.

What are jean trends that should be set aside now but will come around again?
I think the only thing we are seeing less and less of (thankfully) is the super low-rise. I am sure there will be some Britney-like pop star that will bring back the super-sexy low rise jean. This jean makes your butt look smaller, but sitting down is not an option.

What’s the key to hot modern jean?
Just the right amount of washing, not too many whiskers, but just enough to flatter you in all the right places. Women need not be afraid of whiskers; they can be extremely flattering when in the right place.

Talk to us about butts.
Not every butt is created equal, which is why we need so many alternatives. A larger butt will need a larger pocket size, but placement must be in the center of the butt not too high, not too low. A smaller butt needs pockets on the smaller size and set a little higher to create roundness. A flap pocket is also helpful to add some extra padding.

What’s the best pair of work-appropriate jeans?
Dark sleek trouser Jeans with a mid rise.

What’s the best pair of date jeans and why?
This is dependent on a woman’s shape but the Citizens of Humanity Ingrid style is a great go-to jean. In a dark rinse these jeans will perk up your butt and show some healthy curves. After-all men do love curves! For the girl with enough natural curve go for the Paige Hollywood Hills.

What are the three top denim no-nos?
1. Get your jeans hemmed; don’t let drag on the ground. Please don’t hem them too short because that is much worse than too long. 2. Don’t show your crack no matter what your age; if your jeans are low wear a long top. 3. Jeans will stretch a half size to a full size so be sure they are tight when you buy them, just make sure that you don’t need assistance putting them on everyday.

What is a great lightweight jean for warmer months?
Wide-Legs look great with a flip flop or a wedge. Fidelity’s wide leg Blue Belle and J Brand’s Monroe Trouser and Kasil light weight trouser.

The great denim debate: To wash, dry clean or neither?

samsung_washing_machine.jpg

To dry clean or not to dry clean: that is the question.  Many denim aficionados swear by dry cleaning their designer denim, while some prefer the cold wash and hang to dry method, and still others don’t wash their jeans for months at a time.  Some Rock & Republic jeans have “Dry Clean Only” labels inside.  I am guilty of just throwing mine in the washer and (shock!) dryer sometimes.  In fact, I’ve been told that many dry cleaners will simply wash denim in a washing machine rather than actually dry clean them.   What do you do?

5 Denim Disasters to Avoid

We found this article on SheKnows.com and had to share it with our readers.  We agree on most points but had to interject on a few so-called “disasters”.

Your favorite pair of jeans is like your security blanket — soft and comfy. But do they make you look good or goofy?
You can be comfortable and stylish in denim — just make sure to stay away from these huge no-no’s:
1. The dreaded “muffin top”
A symptom of super-low rise jeans, the muffin top occurs when your stomach or back fat spills over your waistband. Ladies, keep in mind that just because you look okay from the front does not mean you get the all-clear from behind. If there is any spillage, you need a larger size of jeans — or, at the minimum, a longer (and not-too-tight) shirt.

2. Tapered jeans
No one will care how skinny your ankles are when you’re wearing jeans that make your hips look like the Titanic. (Maybe this is why this style originally went out back in the 80s.) This rule goes for skinny jeans, too — only wear them if you’re 15 pounds underweight or more. Which means for most of us: just don’t. (Editor’s Note: We disagree on this one - the right skinnies can be worn by just about anyone with the right top.)

3. Mom jeans
These denims, the laughingstock of the fashion world, feature high waistbands and flat butts that do nothing for anyone’s figure, least of all a mama whose body probably has, ahem, changed over the years. A mid-rise bootcut is a much better look — unless you’re petite, in which case a straighter leg will suit you better. (Editor’s Note: There’s a big difference between mom jeans and the new flattering higher rises and wider leg cuts that are popular now - again - its all about how you wear them.)

4. The wrong length
Ideally, the cuff of your jeans should reach the ground right about at your heel, especially if you’re wearing pumps. This will mean buying jeans in different lengths, one for for heels and another for flats. The splurge is worth it! (Just be sure you’re not going to trip yourself up. Even in the finest denim trousers, falling on your behind is never attractive.)

5. Cheaping out
Without necessarily going to an extreme, there is a reason that designer jeans cost more than the discount retailer’s house brand: when you find the one that suits your body type, they will really fit and flatter. A pair of jeans with a really awesome cut, color and construction will slim what’s wide, smooth what’s lumpy, and top it all off with a little va-va-va-voom.

What other denim disasters can you think of?

An interesting alternative to hemming your jeans….

We ran across this site today and thought we’d share it with you.  It’s PantsFix.com which presents an interesting alternative to hemming your jeans.  We know sometimes you like to wear your jeans with flip flops, and sometimes with heels, and with this product, it appears you can!  We wouldn’t think this would work as well on something like Rock & Republics which have a 36″ inseam, if you are normally a 30″ inseam because there would be too much bunching - but if your jeans are just a couple of inches too long for you - try this!  They keep your jeans from dragging on the ground and give a natural look.  Check out the after (left) and before (right) pics below.  They run $17 for a of pair of Pants’Fix®, a pair of thermo adhesive and 3 pairs of adhesive velcro.

Denim 101: Spotlight on 7 for All Mankind

We found this guide at National Jean Company’s website and thought it was a great fit guide to share with our readers.  From time to time we’ll feature different brands to help you decide what style best suites you!

7 for All Mankind by denim guru Jerome Dahan, are known for their buttery soft stretch, comfortably snug fit and celebrity following. The magic of 7 for All Mankind is the way they maximize the shape of the wearer.

The A Pocket has a low rise and fits the shape of the leg: narrow at the knee, flare bottom. The waistband is contoured, lower in the front than in the back. This protects against a peek-a-boo in the back and makes the jean look generally lower in the front. This stretch denim is very forgiving on athletic legs, and rounder bottoms.

The Bootcut has a low rise, sits low on the hips and has a snug fit through the leg, loosens just above the knee. This is the signature jean by Seven.

The Dojo is the lowest fitting jean from 7 for All Mankind. The fit is tight through the leg, until it breaks into wider trouser leg. The bottom has a wide hem for a very sharp and sophisticated look.

The Ginger Wide Leg is a lightweight denim style with the spirit and style of the 1970’s. The contoured waistband has a front rise of 9”, 13.5” in the back. A single crease runs down the front and back of the legs giving the legs a long and lean look.

The High Waisted Trouser is a sophisticated and fashion forward style. They fit slim through the hips and fit wide through the thighs and leg. This is our highest rise at 13.75” and higher in the back at 16.25”. The slant front pockets add to the trouser style and the besom back pockets give a clean and smooth appearance. This only embellishement is a crease down the front and back of the leg.

The Kate Straight Leg is a slim fitting jean with a slightly stretchy feel. The denim pant has five pocket styling and straight leg. The waistband is contoured for a flattering fit on the waist and hips, a lower rise in the front at 7.5” and higher in the back at 12.25”.

The Lucy Skinny Pant combines the aesthetic of a jean, rivets, pockets, button, zipper fly with the feel of a legging. Runs true to size. The thick knit fabric keeps you in and warm. Fantastic with boots.

The Roxanne is the essential silhouette for a sophisticated denim look. Roxanne has a tapered, slimmed-down leg, intended to scrunch at the ankle over a killer pair of heels. The back of the jean has a yoke that rounds and lifts the bottom. The contoured waistband flatters the waist and hips, giving coverage in the back at 13.5” and lower rise in the front at 7.5”.The soft denim weave will tend to stretch a size with wash and wear. If you are between sizes, try down a size the jeans will stretch to your shape.
