Just when we thought we’d seen everything when it comes to denim, Naked and Famous (the company who brought us the Glow in the Dark Jean last year) has surprised us once again. The Canadian denim brand recently debuted a pair of men’s jeans that are scratch and sniff. When scratched, the jeans release a raspberry fragrance!

Chioma Nnadi at Vogue recently wrote about her experience with Shawn Joswick. Joswick is a customized denim professional who has customized distressed jeans for individuals and companies, including Barney’s and Corso Como. He also works out of a denim boutique in Brooklyn, Brooklyn Denim Company.

Nnadi narrates the process of her visit to Joswick’s studio. First, Joswick starts by looking at “wear pattern” of the jeans, which are the patterns and lines that develop based on the fit or wear to the person’s body.  He then whips out an array of tools, everything from sandpaper to power tools, to add distressing and fraying to the jeans. The last step comes from washing them, frequently multiple times, as Nnadi stated that she washed hers upwards of 5 times, adding bleach and salt to the cycles.

I found it very interesting that someone is actually claiming to be a professional at distressing jeans and is hired by companies to do so! I think pastel neon jeans in pinks, oranges, yellows and greens are going to be a huge hit for Spring/Summer 2012! I’ve been seeing a lot of the highlighter pen shades around in jewellery, accessories, shoes and some denim at the press days and it looks great! I know neon is hard to wear and some of you have found it hard to venture into the coloured denim trend which blew up this past Spring/Summer, but I think now we are all accustomed to the bright shades, it wont be so hard to jump on the neon bandwagon.

I think it was the next step in colour actually for denim. Every other colour has been done. From what I have seen though, none of the denim is as bright as the highlighter pens, so don’t worry, it’s more pastel shades and muted tones, but you can still tell it has a florescent inspiration. I know the high street labels like Topshop, Aldo, Miss Selfridge etc are doing neons but I can’t wait to see if premium brands like J Brand, Paige, Current/Elliott, Siwy, 7 For All Mankind and others bring out their take on the pastel neon trend for a few styles outside their Look Books! There are some styles which I think would be perfect for the colour palette!

Denim jackets are great to wear this autumn and are a fantastic addition to your wardrobe. Because denim jackets have a long time span, they were historically worn by people who did not have a lot of money to spend and belonged to the working class during the late 1600’s. Later on, they became popular in the United States since the 1950’s. Nowadays, denim jackets are worn for all sorts of occasions, are never out of style and look great on any type of body shape!

I’ve chosen two completely different types of premium denim jackets for you to see. I chose the first jervoise denim jacket because I love combining dresses with denim jackets. It just gives the outfit a completely different look and this is a great way to show you that you could combine your denim jacket with almost anything. I also love the fact that this jacket is lightly washed, resulting in a much more laid-back and older look which reminds me of the 70ies.

The other denim jacket is a biker jacket with a huge black corsage. The combination of a tough biker-looking character and the corsage adds a bit more sophistication and looks very elegant. The asymmetric zip closure also gives the jacket a more edgy-appeal. No matter what kind of denim jacket you choose to buy, most jackets can be worn with anything and are also great for accessory matching. One thing is for sure, denim is certainly here to stay.

Berry coloured denim has been my favourite ‘coloured denim’ shade for a really long time now. I just love the variety of purples, pinks and deep reds that berry can come in and so many brands are releasing their take on the colour. I own a few pairs myself, I have Paige’s Eternity Verdugo’s, 7 For All Mankind’s Dark Violet Gummy’s and the J Brand Black Cherry skinnies.

Berry is actually my favourite shade for Fall/Winter, it’s so versatile and I also own it in lots of clothes like shoes, tops, a dress and a coat. It’s perfect! Flares:

• Hippie: Wear flares with a tie-dye shirt and platforms, add accessories such as glasses or a headband, don’t forget your peace sign.
• Rosie The Riveter: Pair your flares with a chambray shirt and add a headscarf.
• Sailor: Add a striped tee and sailor hat to your flares.

Leather Pants:

• Cat Woman: Wear leather pants and a slim fitting black top, leather boots and black cat ears.
• Biker: Leather pants paired with motorcycle jacket and black boots.
• Sandra Dee: Wear your leather pants, leather jacket and heels. Curl your hair in and add some lipstick.

Cargo Pants:

• Indiana Jones/Explorer: Wear your cargo pants with a white shirt, khaki vest, add a hat and binoculars.
• Army: Cargos paired with a camouflage or khaki top, boots and dog tags.
• Construction Worker: Cargos paired with white tee shirt, hard hat and tool kit or belt.

Colored/Printed Denim:

Colored Denim makes a great staple for building a costume.

• Angel: Wear white jeans, a white top, wings and a halo.
• Bee: Wear yellow or black jeans with a yellow or black shirt, add some wings.
• Lady Bug: Red Jeans and red top (you can cut out some black felt dots) and add some wings.
• iPod Commercial: Wear black jeans and black top, add an iPod and dance the night away.
• Leopard or Snake: Wear your (leopard or snakeskin) printed pants with a matching/neutral top, add whiskers if necessary.

Overalls:

• Farmer: Add a plaid shirt and some hay (and stuffed farm animals)
• Miner: Wear a Henley shirt, boots and add a headlamp and some tools.
• Scarecrow: Wear a plaid shirt, and hat, add stuff your sleeves with hay.

Shorts:

• Daisy Duke: Shorts, plaid shirt or crop top and heels.
• Britney Spears: Shorts, white tank top, over-sized sunglasses and Uggs or other boots.

Basic Blue Jeans:

• Where’s Waldo: Add a red striped top, stocking cap and glasses.
• Cowboy: Add a denim shirt or plaid shirt, vest, boots and hat.
• Nerd: Add rolled/cuffed jeans, tee shirt, glasses and carry around book and apple (you could also wear overalls).
• Bella Swan: Wear skinny jeans and Chuck Taylors, tee shirt and hoodie. Wear no makeup to keep your face pale.

Coloured denim is my absolute favourite trend this season! I think having brightly coloured jeans for Summer is just so fun! They always make me think of fresh fruits and popsicles as well as flowers. They just scream Summer to me! Especially the pinks/reds/oranges and yellow tones. Those are the brightest. I’m really glad that the trend has exploded in the past few months and all of the brands have brought out brightly coloured jeans! It’s wonderful.
