Has anyone tried the South Beach Diet lifestyle?

I just got the book. I don't really want to "diet" because honestly I only want to lose about 5 pounds, but I really want to focus on my health this year. Exercise more, eat much healthier and get back the energy I had before I was pregnant with my daughter (who is now 19 months). I have been reading about the South Beach lifestyle and it seems really healthy...did it work for anyone? Any suggestions?

The hardest part to me, is that I am doing it alone. My husband is looking to gain muscle weight this year.

South Beach ... Atkins ... bunch of BS IMO.
I don't think there's a single diet that is best for everyone; some diets work better for some people, others for other people.

I tried the SB diet 3 years ago with my mom and we both put on like 10-15 pounds, instead of losing weight. The ABS diet is way better because it doesn't restrict you to eat certain foods and it teaches you that everything is okay in moderation and even allows a cheat meal once a week.

I did South Beach for a little while freshman year. The introductory phase was the absolute pits. I dreamt about carbs and I was cranky. The second phase was better but after I stopped the diet (i.e. after I started eating carbs again) I started eating carbs I had NEVER eaten before--cereal like four times a day, ice cream with tons of toppings and stuff. I just didn't care for it, and I didn't really feel any healthier on it.

There are some valuable lessons from it--don't drink sodas, try not to eat too many simple sugars, eat whole grains instead of refined ones...go for that if anything!

I did the SB diet. I began about two years ago. I lost almost 40 lbs on it and I have kept it off. The first few days were hardest, but I really learned alot about food and my eating habits while on it. I don't really follow it now, but I definitely still cook many of the recipes and I am much more aware of what I eat

I think you could accomplish losing 5 pounds by just altering your diet slightly and by gradually adding in better food choices, eating times and cutting out a snack a day or eating after 6 or 7 at night.

Here is a good site for basic healthy eating guidelines, it's not a diet per se like the South Beach or Atkins, it's just healthy eating information. Guide to Healthy Eating and Living

As a side note, I did the South Beach and a similar diet called the Scarsdale Diet, a medical diet for diabetics, to lose weight quickly after I have my children. I took off about 10 pounds and kept it off but I changed my eating for life, not just for the term of the diet.
