makeup for winter formal--carnivale

Ok my winter formal is this Saturday. The theme is Carnivale, so I want my face to be colorful, and maybe a little dramatic. I am no expert in doing my own makeup for special events, I can do daily basic stuff...so I'm going to book an appointment somewhere at a Nordstrom beauty counter to get my makeup done. Which brand should I look into, a brand that has a wide range of colors (eyeshadows and liners) and that you think would do a good job with colors? Last year I got my makeup done at the Stila counter for a natural look. Two of my friends went to the MAC counter, and their makeup looked dramatic, but too dramatic and heavy for me. So I guess my question is, what other brands can I look into [that are sold at Nordstrom] that doesn't have heavy ingredients or doesn't look heavy?

I got my prom makeup(four years ago..uh...depressing) done at Bobbi Brown and it was lovely!
I also really love Laura Mercier, and NARS. NARS is probably your best bet for brighter colors and whatnot, the other 2 for more natural looks.

I was going to suggest NARS as well...their current collection is stunning.

I also love Smashbox! Dior is also pretty and colorful.

Thanks for the suggestions! I narrowed down to either NARS or Smashbox. Hmmm I looked at both collections on Sephora...don't know which one I like better. I'll probably end up going with Smashbox since it's cheaper, and I'll be buying a couple things after the makeover.

I just got my first set of Smashbox makeup. It's nice but it's not STELLAR...on MakeupAlley the girls just love their NARS.

if neither of those work out for you, definitely try lancome. they have a wide range of colors and i just love their products. (particularly eye shadow, waterproof eyeliner & juicy tubes!)

I am surprised no one said MAC, though I don't use it

I would suggest Smashbox for a more colorful look or Bobbi Brown for a dramatic, elegant look. Either way, it will just be fun!

Dramatic, go for MAC. You can always ask them to tone it down a little bit. Other than that, I say go for NARS. (:
