Dry, Chapped, Bleeding Lips

I've just started taking accutane about 2 weeks ago, and my lips have become very dry and chapped. Ive just been using chapstick brand chapstick and was wondering if anyone knew of anything that worked better.

a good friend of mine who took accutane carried a small tube or pot of vaseline EVERYWHERE with her...she swore by the stuff.

Smith's Rosebud Salve or Lip Medex
Agree with the above^ Smith's Rosebud Salve is really moisturizing. If you don't like the rose smell, I'd go with Burt's Bees lifeguard's choice or beeswax lip balm.

When I was on Accutane (years ago) I used an ointment under the lip balm...it was like a moisturizer for the lips. Then I would put the lip balm on top to seal the moisture in.

I think it was this:http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/detail?prodid=280974&previousURI=/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/search?page=1^Query=lip^ActiveCat=65^startLink=1

One of the most important things I found when I was on accutane was to never, ever leave my dorm room without my lip balm. I just bought tons of them and put them everywhere.

The best balm I have ever used is Lucas Pawpaw ointment, but it is really hard to find in the US. It usually has to be shipped from Australia.

Vaseline is amazing! It's the only thing that keeps my lips nice during the winter.

I second that, Vaseline works wonders and it's cheap! You can buy a wee container in the travel section of any drugmart, so you can take it along with you anywhere. Also try BurtsBee's products, their products are naturally based and extremely moisturizing.

When I was on Accutane, I used Vaseline for almost everything too. My nickname was Crackhead....

Does anyone know of anything better than burts bees and carmex? I've used both for over a year and now looking for something more moisturizing. it seems my lips are always chapped, well not chapped, but not as i would like them. Aside from that, i get plenty of water a day and my diet is very good.

Accutane in the US=Roaccutane in the Commonwealth.

It is the most heavy duty acne treatment available. People take a course of treatment for 6+ months and it is supposed to permanently improve your skin. It is mainly used for people with cyst type acne (those horrid under the surface ones.)

One of the side effects of it is having very, very dry chapped lips.

oh isnt that the stuff thats horrible and makes you bleed from your nose too and makes you ill? was it the same stuff banned in Brazil because it made people commit suicide?

Yeah...the nosebleed thing is also because of the way that it dries you out.

It isn't something that should be taken lightly...only if the acne is really bad.

The suicide connection has not been proven. I survived it

my best friend took accutane years back...he's pimply as ever!

but anyways, another vote for Vaselines and carmex. greasier the better.

Medicinal Ingredients: Camphor 1%, Menthol 1%, Phenol .54%

It kind of has the texture of vaseline and the smell of vicks. It's seriously the only thing that REALLY works for me when these cold Canadian winter winds kick in! Oh and also, be sure to get the one pictured not the lip balm stick version. Just isn't the same and you can't slather it on thick when u need too! Hope this helps!

i use fresh brand- sugar scrub lip balm. i love it and so does my cousin. she and i have badly chapped lips and i hate using chapstick because it leaves my lips white. i think it is from the dead skin cells.

vaseline!!!

Similar to Vaseline, but much better IMO is Aquaphor Healing Ointment. It's amazing!

You can find it at any CVS, Walgreens, etc. It's made by Eucerin, and it's used for:
  • cracked, dry or chafed skin; and chapped lips
  • minor cuts and burns
  • sensitive skin
  • skin irritations from laser treatments and radiation therapy
Here's a pic & a link for more info:
