Motorcycle licenses

How do you get one? I wanted to surprise my boyfriend by renting him a harley for a day b/c he has always talked about them..but I just realized he doesn't have a license so now it can't be a surprise...does anyone have one? What does it involve?

Contact your local department of motor vehicles and ask them how one could go about getting one. It may depend on what state you live in and if they have a graduated licencing system or not.

On a side note, you sock! I wish my GF would rent me a Kawasaki or a nice Honda for a day or two. I have been considering a motorcycle for the summertime to save on gas, but the risks kind of outweigh everything.

It is the same process as getting a license for a car (here anyway). You need to take a written test and pass a road test. It is then just added as a class on your regular driver's license and functions the same way.

At least that's how it was when I got mine 12 years ago

shit.. this isn't going to work..we don't have a motorcycle for him to take the test in. I was so proud of myself for thinking of a good present...back to the drawing board....

In the state of NC, you can get a temporary license by just taking a written test. To get the real deal you need to take a driving test.

Great gift idea. I hope it works out.

has he ever ridden a motorcycle before? i think it would be kinda scary to take a written test and then be given a harley to drive in city traffic, etc. my dad has been riding motorcycles all my life and i've ridden on back but ive never driven one myself.

^agreed, if he's not a skilled rider then I can't see this going well. And, it is also unlikely that anyone would rent a bike to someone with a temporary permit IMO.

still pretty much the same process.

if he's never ridden one before and he only gets a temp license i don't think it's safe to rent him a harley. but i guess its safer than a crotch rocket!

well in OR they have a weekend class. You learn everything--you take your driving and general knowledge test--if you pass both you get your endorsement--based on the instructor of course. These are all day classes btw. On the next day all you do is go to DMV & get ur pic taken for ur new license, plus u get a discount on ins. cause u took the endorsement class. Anyway its pretty simple in my state. I took it.
