hahaha you just really succinctly put a point on what annoys me most about BAPE. It's supposed to be "street gear" but, living in NYC, I get to see the actual street/hip hop culture all the time. Bombing, breaking, and rapping were BORN HERE for gods sake. You know what the thug-types actually wear, the real ones? The rapper labels - sean jean, echo, akademiks, baby phat, stuff like that. BAPE I kinda feel like is for those who want to acheive that hip hop look but also show off that they're rich. Which kinda seems contradictory to me. I dunno, I could rock the BAPE stuff but I wouldn't be wearing evisus at the time LOL
actually the problem with your statement is that 1) you're referring to a segment of streetwear and 2) BAPE is from Japan and to assume that Japanese fashion culture is idential to American fashion culture would be like comparing Baroque with Renaissance.

while BAPE wasnt specifically made for hiphop per say, i think it's very worthy to note that the relationship between hip hop and the "new money" mentality is as tight as blood brothers. hip hop from the ghetto till the starlights has always been and will always be about "making it big", thats why you see the loud fashion, the loud jewelry, the loud cars, etc.

in that sense, BAPE isnt too far off dont you think from representing streetwear or hip hop for that matter? who says it has to be about wearing Ecko?

i think streetwear refers to a style of fashion that is "anti establishment". sometimes we get too fixated into thinking a few brands represent the entire subculture of fashion.

and if you notice those "thug types" as BLM puts it, interestingly even they may be poor (for the most part atleast), if you look at their shoes it tells alot. Jordans. Air Maxes. Timberlands. all these shoes are 100+ shoes. expensive shoes is my point.

again, you see the same parallelism between hip hop and "new money". making it big, BUT more importantly, SHOWING that you are big time even if you may not realy be it.

Aipume, I'm interested to know more about the stores where they sell BAPE. How many are there, and are there always people waiting in line before they open? That's crazy. I've also heard there are rules about what you try on & whatnot. I guess it adds to the exclusivity. Also, how can BAPE's target audience even afford their clothing??
there's one store in NYC at green street in SOHO. yeah people wait in line. allow only a certain amount of people in the store at a time. you CANT try anything on at all so everything you buy is brand new literally. they have a shirt if you want to get your size right.

BAPE's target audience can afford their clothing they have money =p
people who buy bape arent poor. i dont know why we are so fixated to thinking streetwear or hip hop has to be only about the poor.

I didnt say anything about it being poor, just that the people I see that are actually into the culture dont spend a lot of money on their clothing. That doesn't make them poor per se
post #1206 of 35104
well... my best response would be the fact that the word "ghetto" which was once used as somewhat of a derogatory term is now being associated with luxury and over-indulgence... sprouting the term "gehtto-fabulous"...

http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...hetto+fabulous

Ghetto Fabulous

Referring to the style of nouveau riche people who have grown up in ghetto or urban areas. The combination of bad taste,an urban aesthetic and desire to wear one's wealth. Basically, high priced but tacky clothing and accessories.
People with million dollar homes decked out all in black, gold and black glass. The expensive version of cheap Korean store furniture.

I understand that there's a distinction between "hip-hop" and "gangsta-rap", but a majority of people seem to lump them all in together...

Yeah, I always thought the dudes representing the hip hop look preferred to spend their cash more on bling?

and i actually arguing that people who are in this culture spend a higher proportion of money on fashion relative to their income. like i mentioned before, you can practically see it in their shoes =p regardless of even if you were to argue about the authenticity of it, the aspiration to look good and "looking rich" is clearly there and will always be intrinsic in hip hop fashion and perhaps to a lesser extent streetwear

they'll spend it on anything that makes them look rich. look sucessful. look "new money". look like they have finally made it out from the dirt. its spawned its own unique fashion subculture. you can even go as far as to argue that high fashion has felt that presence in some form or another. Karl Lagerfelt walking down a Chanel runway, decked out in Chrome Hearts (rings, belts, necklaces). i mean what does that say about streetwear, high fashion, and really fashion as a whole?

again, dont confuse hip hop as being synonymous with streetwear. i like to think of hip hop as being a subculture of the streetwear subculture. even vogue puts the hippie culture back during the vietnamese war as a sort of streetwear interestingly and clearly you wouldnt want to mix hippies with 50 cents right?

lets also not forget our own past.

until only recently, denim as a whole was considered tasteless and classless

or another good example is post 1776, the British were laughing at the simplistic fashion sense of the American

:P

It's interesting to compare different kinds of wealthy people and what they spend their money on. Generally, millionaires who have worked hard, invested, and saved their whole life don't spend their money on clothes, cars, and bling. They often buy cars that aren't brand new and shop at discount stores. Because of this, their money is better spent in the long run because their children will have money for an education and their grandchildren will also see that inheritance.

I work in a church choir that is in the wealthiest part of Cincinnati. I think it's one of the top ten richest areas in the country, and everyone in that choir is probably a multi-millionaire. But they don't show it. Sure, they wear nice clothes, but their cars are not extravagent and you wouldn't know it by talking to them. Sometimes I forget they're so wealthy because they seem so normal and nice.

Compare that to musicians and movie stars that make millions overnight. They go through that money so fast, if their career fails, a lot of them get screwed. Big difference

im almost five six...

i dont like getting things hemmed either - i have maybe one pair of jeans in my collection that id hem and keep

as for a blazer, hemming them would make the pockets lower on it, ill skip that for now

i am going to a wedding soon, and i am excited about getting fitted for my one suit ill ever need (hopefully) and i want it to be slim as hell, i wish i could get some bootcut trousers for them too

Man you guys are so little! I'm 6'2" and wear a 34. Every guy should own a suit or two that fits him really well. You may not find bootcut pants though... straight legs are pretty standard. Just don't get pleats Just wait until you're actually IN a wedding party, then you'll have to rent a tux! Good luck with that!

I know, but I hate doing that. After 2 years, they shrink to a nice length

actually it depends on the blazer. for short people you want to have the least amount of buttons, preferably one button blazers. you want to buy a blazer that was designed short so you dont have to hem it alot as well. but i wouldnt worry about the pockets being too low unless it was blatantly bad.

Dior Homme F/W 2005 had a few blazers that had pockets like less than 2 inches above from the hemline so you can always call it trendy!
