it shouldn't be a choice between "keep the original stitching" and "ruin my jeans completely, shred the ass crack and f them over permanently."

The people did
ruin his jeans, but they didn't do it "on prupose". But you can't expect to have your jeans taken in at the hips/butt/thighs and have them still remain perfect. Unless they take the jeans apart, and start all over as if they were making a pair of jeans.
The guy asked for the jeans to get taken in, which the tailors did. What was so wrong with that? If you tihnk of it in that aspect they didn't do anything wrong, they did what they were told. If you pair retail, or close to retail, or heck if you get any kind of designer jeans that you need to get taken in you need to explain exactly how you want them to alter your jeans, and/or bring in a pair of cheap jeans and have them do what you want on the expensive pair, to the cheaper pair. That way you'll know what it'll look like.
The only way I can think of the tailors taking the jeans in on the butt, and keeping the original stitching, is if they made some (visible) folds in the jeans on the butt, which would make the pockets closer together.
sonja_k, if you had to get a pair of jeans taken in on the butt how would you get it done? Or how would you tell them how to do it? Aside from actually shrinking the jeans. (which is what I would have tried)
