My Encounter with a Know-it-All Salesperson

I just had a terrible experience at a boutique downtown. I was looking to try on Bobby Big T's with the Sunshine Rainbows. They had them and I asked for a size 27 and tried them on. I thought they looked "okay." I tried on a 26 and was really excited about them, so excited I almost paid "gasp" retail. The salesgirl proceeded to tell me that i could get better looking jeans at the GAP and I clearly had the wrong size and style for my body.

She then brought me a size 26 in Sammys. I thought the Sammy's looked like total poop on me ( I really don't like this style anyway, I really hate how the pockets go below my butt) She told me that this was the only style of TR that would work for me because I have a long torso and short legs. She made me feel really bad about my body and myself and now I am just sad. I guess I just needed to vent, because this post was kind of pointless.

I was just wondering if it was true that people with short legs should only wear Sammys (I'm 5'3", weigh 114, and have a 28" inseam in flats and 30" in heels if that helps)

Go back, and kick her in the nads.
She has to have really big galls to say something that full of lies and bitchy to a customer.

She's just jealous
Hell no, the saleslady needs her head examined!! I have shorter legs than you and I wear sammys, bobbys, joeys and I just bought a pair of billys. Some sales people are so dumb!! Personally I rarely listen to what the sales people say cuz for the most part they're just trying to make money off you... that being said I have had a few encounters w/ some really nice sales people!

What an ass! I work in retail and I would *never* say anything like that to a customer! Grrr...

I'm 5'1" and I love all my jeans. I don't think it's the cut or the wash that pulls a jean off -- I think it's the person and as long as you think you look good in them and you feel confident and sexy in them, then everyone else will also.

You should call the store, ask to speak to the manager, and tell him/her about your experience. I'm sorry she was such an ass to you

I think what got into my head is, if she thinks it looks bad, do a lot of other people think so, too. And the fact that she pointed out that I had a long torso and short legs, which I always knew but I thought no one else had really noticed before.
What she said is totally illogical. *If* you have a long torso and short legs, then the low pockets on the Sammys would make your legs look shorter.
She obviously has not the faintest idea what she's talking about, so I'd really not worry about how the jeans fit.
Next time take a friend with you! One you know tells you the truth.
Jeez, sometimes I really want to kick SA...Sorry everyone who is a SA, but man can they suck!!!

I fdon't know about only sammys looking on short people. My inseam is about 28 inches, and I only own bobbys (1 pair at the moment), and joeys. 3 of them are hemmed, but they all look nice.
That lady was rude, and if I were you I would call the store and speak to the manager (as someone else said).
Just out of curiosity, were the sammys more than the bobbys? (maybe she works on commision and wanted to get you to get the more expensive pair?)
What you could try doing is calling the nordstrom rack. I just got my jeans that I ordered on sunday. (2 day shipping instead of 8!!!) I got Joey cowgirl destroyed for $59. 1-301-365-4111 Virgina

Wow, $59 is a great deal! Congrats! I specifically wanted the Big T Bobby's with the sunshine pockets and they were $240. The Sammy's were just the basic Sammy's so I'm pretty sure they were cheaper.

I think all sammys are $240

Brittney> I feel for you. I had an experience like that before. Like darlinanna says - when those things happen I usually demand to talk to her supervisor. Also I've called the stores and filed complaints. Remember her name?

She is very ignorant and rude !!! You are a beautiful girl. Maybe she was jealous.
She sounds like an ass--pay no attention to her comments! Call her manager and get her yelled at, unless she was the owner *gasp*, lets hope not!

It happens to all of us--they snicker and make snide remarks about size as well, as in "we don't carry you're size here, why don't you try somewhere else" (that happend at a woman's plus store to me when I was b-day shopping for my Mom a long time ago)

Whatever...!!!

I agree here. If you are going to pick a TR style that doesn't look good with long torso & short legs, Sammy would be it. The low pockets (on the front & the back) would make the torso look longer and the legs look shorter. That salesperson was outta her head.

Was that the last pair of 26s in the jeans you liked? Maybe she wanted to buy them using her employee discount and didn't want you to have them.

Anyway, I think you should WRITE A LETTER. People always take letters very seriously... it would be better than just asking for a supervisor. Just let them know that that salesperson was 1. rude and 2. ruining your shopping experience.
Also... I'm sure the owner of the boutique would like to know that she told you to go to the GAP, instead of dropping the cash in his/her boutique.

thats stupid yopu shouldnt have listened to her. often times i feel salesreps recommend but often times i go with my personal preference. I mean im wearing the jeans not you, i liek the way they look and the way they feel on me so tahts all that should matter.
I'm almost the same size as you, 5'3", 107, size 26 (I prefer a 32-33in inseam though but I think I wear taller shoes than you). I have joeys, bobbys, sammys and a pair of jennifers. Of all of them, my favorite are bobbys. I LOVE how bobbys fit on me and I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE sunshine bobbys!!! Forget what that snooty sales person said and GET THE SUNSHINE BOBBYS!!! You won't regret it just don't get them from them.

I know that you're a 26 but if your ok with a 27 I saw a pair on Ebay in saddleback. I think it from a forum member too. There's still 3 days left but so far the bidding is still low. PM if you want the link.

Thanks everyone for your comments, I'm definitley going to look for a pair of bobby's! I think she might have been the owner's daughter so I will just leave it at that and shop elsewhere!

And thanks ls0501, I'm already planning on bidding on the 27's (I've spoken with the member already) but hopefully a 26 will pop up in the next few days!!

I hope no one else gets discouraged from buying their dream jeans by rude people!

First of all what a BITCH. Secondly. I am not short (5'6") but I agree Sammy's back pocket make me legs look even shorter. DOn't listen to her. I would say post pics here and let us decide.

I am sure you look great in any jeans by seeing your measurements.

Not if you get them from my friend Lisa in the HM!! They are amazing, and I am short, with a long torso. They look great, and fit great too!
Britt, that salesperson was a total fool, to send you away to the GAP!! She should be fired!

NICE!!

BTW, when I worked in a bridal shop, I NEVER sai danything bad about anything a girl tried on, if she was self concious about something, I would make her feel better about it, not bash her.

One girl came in so down on herself, tried on like 4 dresses, each one:
My arms look fat, I cannot wear a strapless
Oh, no , it shows my ugly back too much
Oh, it's too tight, no way I'll be able to look good even if you ordered my size

This girl was built almost exactly like me, not much to worry about, I told her everything looked wonderful.

It is a SALESperson's job to tell you you look good, even if you look like dogshit, as a sales person, you are suposed to find something positive to say about everything.

Feel good she'll get crappy comissions because of her attitude
post #20 of 34
Wow I'd be more than happy to go over there and kick her in the head .
Brittney- that is RIDICULOUS!!! What a b!tch! You are so beautiful, and who cares if you have short legs? I'd bet a million bucks that those bobbys looked awesome on you...some people
post #22 of 34
That's horrible! I love TRs and I'm sure they looked good on you! Why else would you consider retail? I always like to ask my friends for advice, but some random saleslady saying things like that is terrible! It's sooo rude!
i don't care what some dumb broad who will be working in a retail store all her life said to you - i can see your picture and you're cute.

your body type sounds petite too.
myself being 5'10", i often get jealous of how cute the petite girls look in jeans.

flaunt it.
then flip that douchebag the bird.
the sales lady doesnt know what she's talking about! i have 'short' legs too & pockets that go below my butt make my legs look shorter!
