Shopping for Eyeglasses ... online?

Hey all, I've got a quick question regarding these cheap eyeglasses online retailers. Basically, are they selling legit goods or some knock-offs?

I'm curious because I realized lenscrafters sells these glasses $200 and another online retailer has the same ones for $120. If anyone can fill me in on this, I'll bake you some brownies.

Here are some sites I was looking at:
Designer Sunglasses - Prescription Eyeglasses - Oakley, Maui Jim, Ray Ban Eyewear - coolframes.com
Eyeglasses | Designer Eye Glasses, Prescription Eyeglass Lenses Online at Frames Direct
Designer Sunglasses - Designer Eyeglasses | BestBuyEyeglasses.com

THANKS!

You should be fine with most of those sites, though some of them may be selling discontinued models. Since they are online there is less overhead than brick and mortar stores. Also you should know that Lenscrafters is owned by Luxoticca, who also owns pretty much every eyeglass chain out there and they can set the prices since they are a monopoly. Also know that this single company produces glasses branded as Armani, D&G, Bulgari, Chanel, Prada etc. The actual designers themselves do not design the glasses, they just contract Luxoticca to do it for them. They are mass produced and in my opinion of poor quality and design. However if you're after the label then get them.

On a side note mark up on a pair of frames is usually at least 2-300 Percent, and mark up on lenses is in some cases 5000%

ex. Prada frame retail $350
Lenses from Lens crafters $250+ for single vision polycarbonate lenses plus anti reflective
=600 plus tax

actual wholesale cost of prada frame apx $75
wholesale for single vision polycarbonate lenses with anti reflective coating apx $8-12

As you can see these sites can easily make a profit and you can save money.

Long story short, buy them online, however go to lenscrafters first and try them on. and know exactly what you are ordering, You CANNOT tell from a picture if you will like it on your face, or even if it will fit.

^nice post Ryan
except for the fact that is Luxottica, not Luxoticca
they're clients of the agency in which I work, so I know well lol

and you're right, basically it's a monopoly

yeah, you are right i completely misspelled lol. i actually worked for them for about 6 years. before they pretty much bought everyone out. then i moved into the independent side of optics. there are far superior independent eyeglass lines that may not have a designer name, but in my honest opinion are way better, check out: Salt, Oliver Peoples (now owned by luxottica but i think still independently designed and manufactured) Orgreen, IC Berlin, Mykita, Face a Face and the like. you will be getting a lot more for what you're paying for.

For the most part I think that they are ok. But like the first person said they may be discontinued models or slightly defective. Check their privacy and return policy. If they have none I would be a bit more careful!
