best beginner raw denim brand to buy?

Helllo, I'm finally fed up with the ridiculous jeans I have wasted so much money on and in the end being completely dissatisfied with the fade and quality. I've DECIDED to FINALLY try out this raw denim thing. So excuse me if I'm a newb at alla this =T

from what I've read (and I've read SO MUCH) I've decided that I'm either going to purchase a pair from Nudies Jeans or APC. I've read that APC's are not exactly "flattering" on women? Anyone who has input PLEASE give me some, I'm too anxious to finally go purchase a pair! And the Nudies I've seen look good. I've also read that Denimbirds are the brand from Nudies made for women, correct? I'm TYPICALLY a size 26-27. I will almost NEVER fit anything less than 26 or more than 27. I'm really interested in either the APC New Cures or the Nudies super slim kim. any input, suggestions, experiences or even pictures would be of great help! thanks )

I haven't seen many good women APC nor Nudie fits to be honest; they either fit awkwardly in the butt area or look like guys in skinny denim. I highly recommend the Sling & Stone Naomi and Mary cut for women. They are very flattering from what I've seen (I'm a guy), but that is only if you are willing to spend a hefty 300 bucks. But I'm positive that it'll be worth it.

If you want cheaper options (150-200$), April 77 Joey Overdrives and Pure Blue Japan's (PBJ) Slim woman cut are also great. There's also Skull Linda as well as Somet's which are straight leg fits that are more adapted to the Asian body IMO. As for Naked and Famous (cheapest), I haven't heard much about them, so I can't tell you anything, but do check that brand out.

Look into these two websites for the brands that I've named out:

Self Edge:

Sling & Stone - Sling & Stones : Self Edge : Japanese Selvedge Denim

Blue In Green:

PBJ - http://blueingreensoho.com/site/inde...mart&Itemid=28

Skull - http://blueingreensoho.com/site/inde...mart&Itemid=28

Somet - http://blueingreensoho.com/site/inde...mart&Itemid=28

Hope that helps a bit.

Hai!

i have to agree, APCs I dont find flattering on women, unless that is the particular look you are going for but given that you are looking at the SSK, I doubt it :P.

Btw, the SSK is a very flattering cut, if you get a chance try them out first because they are elastin mix and strretchy. I believe it is size down 1 for those. You mentioned you typically wear 26 27, in what brands would that be?

Also, have a look into naked and famous, pretty low price point like APC and Nudie, but the quality is great and from what I've seen the cuts for women are great. For something a bit pricier, check out sling and stone, theres a few pictures floating around here and they do look damn good. Whatever you end up with tho, make sure to post pictures!

edit: advanti beat me to it

in response to avanti: thanks for all that input. seriously, I have read so much from numerous people on the forums but getting straight advice is a plus so, basically you're not recommending the two particular jeans that I had my eyes on.. hm.. I never had a chance to see those brands before so I'm definitely on that AS I TYPE :P

and anthony thank you for clarifying and repeating the advice I've heard about APC not being fit for girls. I can knock that out of my list of possibilities... So in terms of my size you referred to, I am a 26 to 27 in either Levis, DKNY jeans, Guess, and True Religions. If you can say more about the size topic I'd loove that! But, first things first, I need to find that PERFECT first pair. It may not actually be "perfect" but alas, it shall be a great beginning pair to "break in", right?

if any more info would be of help it would be that I want them in skinny, for sure, probably the skinniest possible. I want something flattering. And yes, anthony, I am filipino so my body is typically of thin legs, but not necessarily a flat behind. and I am only simply emphasising on all this sizing and styles because im located in the bay area in california, and I'm unsure of where I can actually GO and TRY some jeans on...

If your a girl why don't you just try some good society's from revolve or something, they're decent for the low price and are good for experimenting. Although, they're pretty hard to fade...

are you talking about the:

GOOD SOCIETY Straight Leg Jean in Indigo at Revolve Clothing - Free Shipping!

because those are the only ones on that site. I'm really picky about my jeans that's why i need all the help i can seriously get : ( you mention they are good for experimenting which is a plus, not to mention that they're hard to fade, which is actually something I don't mind. I don't want a pair that will fade too fast you know?

No one has really said much about the Nudies I'm checking these two out as of now:

Nudie Jeans - TIGHT LONG JOHNS (DRY INDIGO)

or of course, the

Nudie Jeans - STRETCH SUPER SLIM KIM (DRY INDIGO

I'm looking into those two and now i'm going to check out good societys since ive read about them.

in terms for FIT/skinniness and BEST QUALITY for the buck which would be MOST recommended by everyone:

-SSK
-Tight Long Johns
-April 77 Joey Overdrives
-Pure Blue Japan's--Women's slim
and now the
-Good Society

??

Yeah those are, I got a pair of good societys last month and they are barely showing any fades at all (I kickbox in them) while imo nudie is not really worth the money because at that price range you could just buy a japan raw brand made by denim geniuses.

LOL. definitely (on the last part). So, what would you recommend for japan brands? I've looked at the PBL's... and honestly, the others I've seen did not catch my eye. awaken me on some styles/brands if i am missing out please?
For a first pair, PBJ is excellent and skull has amazing denim but, idk if you want to go with these for a first pair in case you mess up. Make sure you size down because they stretch a lot.

i am looking at this girl's post, and hers look freakin' wonderful. the sling and stones rachel. oh goooodness! I can't find them for a good price and I'm assuming it's too much to spend unless I'm really sure how to deal with raw denim, correct?

oops I meant to type PBJ. They are a bit pricier than the Good Society's. I'm thinking of going cheaper, but still good/decent quality for my first pair then after I get a feel of them and the raw denim deal I can get a more expensive, higher end pair, yeah?

good society's or pbj? i am so indecisive. -__-

Well what city do you live in? If you live in NY or tokyo get the pbj but if you live somewhere else it'll be pretty hard to find raw denim options. Unless you want to pay a massive amount of shipping.

Maaaan. I knew it. I live in the Bay Area. So, I know a few people who have raw denims and they usually don't buy the Japanese Brands due to the fact that the shipping blooows. So what do you think are my best bets? Obviously I'm going to have a difficult time even getting a chance to TRY ON some. In the end I am going to get the most info I can and order a pair. Considering these factors what do you suggest to go for?
i would say nudie...they end up looking the best IMO
post #15 of 41
Your best shot is probably Self Edge located in San Fransisco. I think they carry most, if not all the brands mentioned on this page. Again, you don't need to order all the way from Japan. Both Self Edge and Blue In Green are awesome US-based seller that I really recommend - they can answer pretty much all the questions about sizing and maintenance of your denim.

Also, you can't really 'screw' up a decent pair of raw denim. The 101 raw denim guide on this forum is very concise for starters, and you may read upon some threads on SuperFuture's Superdenim forum. If you are not confident with pre-soaking, you can get your pair in one-wash: they've already soaked/shrunk it for you, but that's mostly an available option for Japanese brands.

And don't be afraid to wash (hand or machine) your jeans - if your pair is of good quality (unlike Nudie which keeps on emphasizing on the 6-month no-wash crap), the indigo will not just wash out like no tomorrow and ruin your pair.

TRBigT-- thanks for saying that! I've seriously had my eye on the Long Johns! My only thing is, I've read they're not typically for girls, or shall I say, perhaps unisex? Does anyone know how that turns out for most chicks wearing them? I'm of a slender body, average. average waist and slim legs.

and Avanti-- thanks! Finally a store I can go check out! Awesome. I'll make sure to stop by sometime this week. And I'm aware of the 101 raw denim guide, I shall look at that soon. I'm planning on dry cleaning my jeans, if I end up with the Nudies. And if I end up with another pair then I shall have to dig up some advice for washing those

My vote is for N&F, anything BUT Nudies. Everybody and their dog wears Nudies......

I'm trying to check the naked and famous ones too. i'm gonna hit up that store in the city, THANKS SO MUCH avanti. lifesaver! i dont need to really order online if i can find a pair at the shop...
If you are able to find N&F you should post some prices. Because I know I am able to get N&F in Calgary for 120 CAD. Want to see how comparable it is to the States.

so far i've seen these (the ones for me at least):

http://blueingreensoho.com/site/inde...mart&Itemid=28

prices of N&F don't seem bad, they seem actually like good buys! ahh, I'm still so tempted and interested in Nudies, I know, I know I'm a 100% newb ;T But really, everyone says they see them on everyone and their girlfriends but I never do around my city. so maybe it wouldn't be sucha "hype" thing to do to wear them, since no one apparently wears them TOO MUCH around this area..

Nudie makes "slim kim" and "super slim kim" that would fit a girl better probably

I'm new at this too (3 months), but I've learned (and spent) a lot in those three months. I would say if you are looking for amazing fades that you should try the Skull 5010 6x6 or the Flat Head. I've got a pair of each of those and a pair of Dior 19cm which I rotate - I wear jeans everyday. The skulls and flat head change almost ever day of wear. It's amazing. I don't know about how they look on women though. You could look for some fit pics online. I'm geussing their tighter slimmer models would look great. Flat head is shrink to fit which adds another dimension of hazard to the sizing issue (cause you can't return after you soak them), but some research should answer any questions.YMMV

I sized down 1 on my skull and I'm happy with the fit, but they actually don't stretch that much...just a little bit. Not like Dior or Naked and Famous (or apc from what i've read).
How many wears have the skulls seen so far?
I've worn the skulls around 35-40 times. I love them. They do stretch a bit. Maybe 0.5 of an inch. I'll try to post an evo pic sometime, but the OP can easily search the forums for evo pics on skull in the meantime.
