Sales Tax...do I charge it? How do I find out? Help a chick!

Hi - so I started selling random name brand stuff from home and made some good money, then I got a lot of stupid fake Sevens and decided that wasn't the way to go, so now I'm buying overstock/return items and selling them on ebay (trying to stay as far away from fakes as I can...btw).

So what's the deal with Sales Tax...I live in CA, so I figure I need to charge CA Sales tax to items sold within Cali. I know I don't have to charge sales tax for 'used' items sold from my home (because it's like having an online yard sale). But for resale items, how do I find out what to charge, and what government agency to give it to once I've charged it? Do I HAVE to have a tax ID number?

Help a girl out please!

What is the point of adding your gender to the post? And do you have another job? If so, what is the harm in not telling them?

You may want to try www.mydssd.com. I don't recommend buying their lists but they have some great information about taxes and stuff.

I believe that you are correct in not having to worry about sales tax unless you sell to residents within California. I was able to get a Tax ID quite simply through the local county business offices. It took a few phone calls and a registration form (~$45 or so) and then I got my ID in the mail. I am now able to attend trade shows and purchase from more vendors (a few vendors won't sell to you unless you have a tax ID)\

Rock on!

Zeitgeist - there really wasn't a point to putting my 'gender' on the post. And I don't know what you are talking about my other job. I work at an oil & gas company if you'd like to know. You are strange. Thanks for the helpful reply~

No - i didn't really care to know. My point was that since you have a "real" job, IRS isn't going to know you are selling anything on the side.

Back to the question. You only need to charge sales tax for items bought, or shipped in state. For ex. if you live in FL, and someone buys something and gets it shipped to FL, you have to charge tax, but if someone buys something in FL, but gets it shipped to GA no sales tax is needed.
