We are trying to find the line for things we should edit and things we shouldn't.

here is a real example. A members is asking me to edit a post because he was called a "faggot"

Would you like the mods to edit out words like this?

what about 'twink'?

things you should not edit:
public youtube videos

sorry, couldn't think of any

they're just words. it's actions that we should be wary of, not some series of text

all this needless censorship is suffocating and frustrating

serious post here.
words mods should edit:
anything deliberately racist, sexist, homophobic
post #7 of 102
While I in theory don't like censorship at all, the spirit of the word used has to be taken into account. I guess that is a case by case basis then.

/\ yea case by case. and especially if somebody requests it be removed.

but the thing is, as soon as we start mod-editing people's words, or giving infractions, people start screaming 'fascist" and stuff

I voted no because I'll probably still use it once in a while in a derogatory fashion towards our homosexual members, but ideally the word should be censored since it's such an offensive and hateful term. If you have numerous requests to remove a certain word in various posts, perhaps it's best to listen to those who are legitimately offended by that term, like riotpoof.

this stuff doesn't bother me too, but i think it's understandable. ideally, the mob will discourage these type of posts enough to minimize them, but given a worst case scenario, maybe censorship of such posts should be considered. however, serious discussion of race, gender, and sexual orientation i think should be game.

But if it's Lorna, of course edit and delete everything.

This sounds about right. We don't want this forum to become a cesspool, but legitimate discussion should be encouraged in areas where it's on-topic.

i mean anything deliberately hateful, like you hate gays and go around spouting off about faggots and whatever
post #15 of 102
most of the time it isnt the word itself but the context of it. there are some words that i use elsewhere that i wont use here even though it isnt in a hateful manner just because i know that the culture of this board deems it unacceptable

pointless imo. if someone posts something like "you're such a faggot" and its changed to "you're such a fa***t" it still has exactly the same effect and meaning.

Dave means that the word and/or entire post is physically edited by a mod.

yea, it would look like "you are such a []"
ucla is such a []
well in all actuality it would be edited followed by a warning followed by temp bans followed by a permanent ban if the behaviour persists
post #21 of 102
i just realized that this entire thread should be edited out because faggot is british for cigarette

this takes up a great deal of time though. its hard to expect volunteer mods to have to mop up everything this much.

perhaps if you would give explanations and lock the threads rather than making them disappear completely as though they never existed people would be fine with it. otherwise it comes off as some sort of conspiracy. and the fact that lorna has STILL not posted anything publicly about the matter just makes it look even worse.

and as for the infractions thing, that is a joke. since when do people get infractions before they are banned anymore? that would make too much sense...
