HonestForum Facelift

It got brought up and I figured it deserved its own thread.

Does HonestForum need a facelift, new banner or is it fine as-is? What should it look like (i.e. what's a better designed forum, post your own mock ups or what have you)?

Here's an idea that would require switching out the banner and not much else:

We need a section entitled "Media" so that I can post as many topics about television shows as I'd like without feeling like a total loser.

every time theres a "face lift" on a website i hate it much more than the previous version. i dont have any problem with how it looks now and i really dont give a fuck about whatever that gradient shit you nerdos are whining about.
who does it have to look "nicer" for ?

the site needs more of a realign than a redesign. i dont want another sufu 4.0 (plus dave is complaining about funds for changing 3 lines of css and hiding 3 layers in photoshop, lets not get too much ahead of ourselves)

i just wand minor changes, like:
fixing the radial gradient around the logo
fixing the banding gradient
removing the new badge on the mall
preloading the tab images for :hover
cleaning up the extraneous links (like in the footer, or the ebay negatives link thats pushing all the content down)
rethinking the ad space

theres a shit ton of wasted space here

also, shit like this shouldn't happen

That kind of stuff never happens to me but, then again, I have a real computer that is designed to be functional as opposed to cute and trendy in a coffee house.

no thats because windows users always make their browser full screen...i keep mine as a reasonable width/height so i can actually be productive in other applications

i should not have to make my browser 1000px wide to use the site :\

Multitasking = Lies!

And anyways, I don't see how I can watch porn, surf HF, and write a paper at the same time.

Also because most windows users have long ago learned that ALT-tab and CONTROL-tab are a perfect way to keep many windows open and not get confused, lost, or lose productivity.

Whereas most apple users STILL don't know about APPLE-tab. <sigh>

The HF logo should be replaced with my avatar. You should have 1 million hits, maybe a server on fire, in no time!

i agree with both kile and mihalis- i think kile's new banner would be a lot better- since the main background of the forum isn't black, having a black-background banner that gets cut off makes no sense.

i also like the new "blog, mall, forum" buttons kile drew up, looks way better than the tired tabbed look (apple.com circa 2000).

also, since HF if free now, how about all us who paid to join when it wasn't get to throw out at least the top banner ads? Especially if we've been somewhat productive members of the forum for a while.

I propose if you've been a member for a year, and you originally paid the 10 bucks to join, you get bumped up to a pro member or at least get to throw out the banner ads. If extra inbox space is just too much storage cost, so be it.

And I have to wonder how expensive this stuff would be for dave in total- kile throws down mockups for shit all the time just as a free example that are 100x better than what Dave apparently pays like $500/Photoshop layer for. Why not just let someone like him make like 3 options for new banner/buttons/other design elements and have a poll? I'm not an expert in web design by any means, but how hard can it be to switch out a few pics? If the site is well-designed (i.e. built to evolve and change) i wouldn't think it would take more than like an hour.

$500? Really?

Microsoft has had such features built in since windows 95 (Keyboard shortcuts for Windows if you're interested). Occasionally they do innovate, shockingly.

Yet another example of why most people buy Macs because they don't really want to take the time to learn how to use a computer to its fullest extent.

lol you guys complain about this banner business.... I mourn for the old mall.
i don't mind the new mall anymore- yes it could use a facelift as well, but i still think its better than the old mall, now that it has comments, etc.

i wish the mall had less wasted space though- the whole left half of the screen is wasted ala sufu 4.0.

how about the category links move to the top and have drop-down lists on hover? like:

Mens~~~~~~~~~~Womens (the drop down lists happen on hover)
26.29 . . . . . . . . . .20.25
30.33 . . . . . . . . . .26.29
34.38 . . . . . . . . . .30.32
Shoes . . . . . . . . . Shoes
Clothes . . . . . . . . Clothes
Accessories. . . . . . .Accessories

Also, split the "shoes, clothes, accessories" categories into separate ones, as they see quite a bit of activity.

Then, the mall could stretch across the whole screen, gallery view could include 4-5 columns instead of 3 and list view could have longer titles without being cut off or 2 lines.

i bet kile could throw a mockup together in like 15 seconds.

i think there should be a section where only brian is allowed to start topics, with him as mod.

mark my word, it would be the most popular section in less than a week.

Right, but it IS hidden
I would like bigger fonts in the forum (like a nice Verdana 10), bigger signatures. And I love Kile's header but I do prefer the current tabs for Forum, Blog & Mall.
for bigger fonts just adjust it with your browser please.
ctrl++ = larger font size. You're welcome.
