Help me fade my trashy bruise!

So I had a little accident at the lake (yes I'm really graceful) and ended up with a huuuuuge welt on my leg that turned into an enormous bruise on my upper thigh. It looks like total trash. All I need now is a cigarette burn on my arm and a hickey, lol.

I iced and elevated it initally and that may have helped a bit, but what can I do now to speed up the healing? These things can take weeks to go away! I have read that heat can work and there are all sorts of crazy concoctions I found online to try.

Does anyone know anything that really works? Thanks a lot for any advice!

Ever tried the hard boiled egg trick?

I've never personally tried it, but have seen a friend do it and it appears to work.

Hard boil an egg, remove the shell, wrap it up in a paper towel, and massage the bruised area with it until the egg is no longer hot.

Don't worry, I can handle both the cig burn and the hickey. I can also wear a wife beater, dickies overalls and a straw hat for added effect.

Let me know if I can be of assistance!

That's so funny-my mom used to do that for me when I got huge bruises as a kid...except she also stuck a silver chain inside the egg too...I still don't get it but it works!

Have you ever tried Arnica? My mom is into a lot of homeopathic stuff and swears by it for bruising. I used it with my last knee surgery and it did help quite a bit. You can buy it at Vitamin Cottage/Whole Foods/some drugstores.

ARNICA (Arnica montana) - TOPICAL side effects, medical uses, and drug interactions.

^Lol, NO!

Really you guys? An egg? I'll try it tonight!

Dannysgirl, thanks for the info on arnica, too! I'm gonna look for it!

Yeah, arnica works really well! Look for it in a gel version sold at health food stores.

EDIT: I think you can get the gel at GNC or other vitamin stores too

Yeah I usually rub at the bruise in a hot shower. It'll start looking nastier before it starts looking better. Hot towel works too if it's a bigger area. The heat helps break up the blood so it dissipates faster. If it's greenish it'll turn more reddish and then start fading.

The egg trick works well because the egg will hold the heat longer than a towel will, but if the bruise is large towel might work best or an icy/hot pack.

I've never tried the arnica. :P

thanks gizmo for explaining the egg trick. I remember my mom use to do that for me too! gahhh, it hurt so bad!! heat and bruise....but as i remember, it made it go away quickly.

apryl, tell us if it works! why don't you put in a piece of silver jewelry just to add to the charm

arnica is amazing!

I biffed it pretty hard a few weeks ago and I had a HUGE bruise on my knee. I am not too concerned about it though haha. But Arnica, like everyone else said, works.

Hey I tried the egg and heat trick and it worked a great deal! I tried that followed by heat applied from a hotpack on and off several times and I can't believe how well it worked!

The bruise just looks like a bit of a shadow now! Much improved! Thanks so much for the suggestions!

arnica is AMAZING! i tripped and fell a couple weeks ago, landing on and breaking a brittle plastic chair. i had a huge cut and then a bruise the size of my hand, (palms and fingers, it was HUGE) on my upper left thigh... it was pretty bad but arnica helped a lot. it was a good thing i wasn't wearing any nice jeans--just shorts--so no PD was harmed in the accident. just my thigh...
