The pair below actually looks faker than the OP's pair. Looks like a scammer on eBay took a random dark wash and attempted some home-made bullet holes with a pocket knife in order to invent a new wash. They look totally weak. Dunno, maybe its just me.

then what about 8ar?? i dont see a BIG difference between 73j and 71j in looks. the only issue i have are the patches. from the pics i've seen i think they are black which i think is terrible

Yes the patches are black, but the bullet holes are placed in the darker areas of the wash so it blends in very well. The pictures don't do the wash justice in my opinion. You'll really have to check out these jeans in person to get a feel of how these really look!

From the pics I've seen of other 73J's, I have gotten very lucky in finding a pair this nice.

Ahhhh... I've flip-flopped on this wash again. I just checked out the 73Js at the Santa Monica store and wasn't really feeling them.

The trick with 71J is the suspension of disbelief - it looks like something that could happen. 73J doesn't, because the wash in the non-destroyed areas doesn't look weatherbeaten - it looks like somebody took a skilsaw to a new pair of jeans... which is more or less the truth.

I'll hand it to YougMan though - the pair he got has some good distress work. Especially on the front-left leg. If I found a pair that was a "perfect roll" I might go for it - It aint no 71J though.

I think the main difference besides the patches being dark (black) is that the area around the holes doesn't look bad on 71J because the denim is light. If 73J didn't have the white around the patches and the area itself looked darker it would look better IMO.

totally agree. you can never get a natural torn look on a pair of jeans that dark because the white weft yarns will always create too much contrast between the fraying around the holes and the darkness of the denim.

Well I think you could do something but you'd have to change the process up a bit (which can be done, but it would have to be tested)

Basically,

- Put the rips

- Apply dye to the tears and then a dye rinse

- Apply patches (medium blue, instead of black would be better)

That way you'd get the yarns looking a closer shade to the tears, the denim and the patches wouldn't look so starkly different.



P.S.
Diesel, you may contact me for ideas in the future since it looks like things are really weirding out for the past two seasons... I haven't seen anything that has 'moved' me so far out of the Preview stuff.

yeah...

I think some of the problem is also because of the direction in which the abrasions and cuts are made.

I would probably have to see a really good specimen in person to get one, but for retail... naw.

Overall picking your pair is much more important with these for those that really like the wash than it was with 71J.

I went through a batch of 73j today. Either one leg was ugly or stupid looking or the front was good but the back wasn't. I'm sure great pairs exist if you can find them.

i'd give these a 7.5 out of 10. they look promising but not until more pics are posted (especially worn ones). with that said, they kill 88S and are almost as nice as 71J. really. 71J was so ridiculously light they almost look like white jeans with some blue areas thrown in. of course some pairs are much better than others. i've been looking for a darker 71J for awhile.. unfortunately these look a bit too dark and unnatural, but i like them nonetheless. or maybe i've just lowered my standards since Diesel has been producing mostly garbage washes in the past year.
