I think they would look a lot better if the soles didnt contrast so much. Nothing but dark/jet black above, and such a bright white below...

That isn't much better IMO. They still look like Chucks. I don't like white soles unless they are on white shoes.

^Are you kidding? Those look nothing like chucks! The only similarity is that they both share a toe cap.
You're acting like a white sole is such an odd thing. Or a characteristic converse style. Not even chucks have a plain white sole though - they have the line going straight through. Not much of a comparison at all IMO.
Moreover, cons are canvas!

They can be canvas or leather.

The grounds for comparison is the toe cap, the height and general silhouette, and the white sole.

A white sole isn't a bad thing, if it's on a white sneaker. But if your sneaker is grey or black with a white sole, it throws the proportions off and looks silly/clownish. Doesnt matter if it has a line or whatever.

^ I agree that an all black shoe (like the Lanvins posted) looks silly with a bright white sole like it has. However, a black chuck looks fine with it's white sole - possibly because it's etched into everyone's mind that it looks 'classic' and simple.

That's exactly why. It's iconic and easy to come by, so people just think it looks good. But it really doesn't. The sole and toe cap together just looks awful. A monochromatic shoe (with sole, toe, and laces all the same color, or at least non-contrasting colors) looks much sleeker and subtler.

So I've been looking for a pair of Navy Boat shoes, and though I preferred a suede material I can get these fairly inexpensively. Thoughts?

Why not just get a Sperry Topsider?

^Fair enough, I just saw the timberland one's on sale here for 50 bucks, and I was debating about whether or not to pick them up as in it was cheap and convenient. One of the downsides of living in small town is that a lot things that most people take for granted as easy to grab I can't get here. I have to drive two hours for the closest GAP and 3.5 for the closest AA store if that gives you an idea.

I suppose I could look around online and find some nice navy suede ones instead, but just looking for opinions as to whether or not those timberlands are horrible.

^ If you want a boat shoe, definitely go for the sperry. It's the boat shoe that all others are judged and based from. I've been wanting a boat shoe all summer - i should have bought some, but now i feel like it's too late in the season...hmmmm

PS...the sperry/BoO are awesome too - but mostly gone now.

I am fairly new in my attempts to, I don't know what to say, wear clothing and accessories which may be considered legitimately 'current'. I don't even really remember how I landed on this forum, but I found it an interesting read and have been loading and reading it daily.

So I feel more knowledgable about jeans now, between here and Authentic Forum, and some of the 'looks' that are currently in style, but one thing really continues to confuse me. Boots are just way, way over my head.

I don't understand what makes for a currently stylish boot. I have read this thead a dozen times and have hunted for other threads about boots, but it's not clicking for me. I bought a brown Jump 'Tim' boot from Endless and I do like it, but now I'm really at a loss for a black boot. I was thinking it should be a shorter, uh, pull on black boot. Ankle boot. But I don't know what the heel should look like, or how shiny it should be, or if zippers are tacky, and that elastic stuff is definitely tacky.

I live in Saint Louis, MO, which seems remarkably conservative for a city of 6mil, but it's in the mid-west. I've found an Aldo store and some boutiques, but the selection seems awful. Many square toed and many white boots, which I see people wearing, but also look like uncomfortable garbage.

The Jump 'Tim' boot really seems about right, but I am at a total loss for an ankle boot. Please advise.

PS - I am on a budget. It makes no sense for me to really splurge on an item of clothing as I know no one who would even begin to catch what was going on there. I care about how the item looks, not the brand. Brand stamps seem tacky, anyway.

PPS - If anyone from STL reads this forum, share me some tips, please!

Hey guys, I need some new ankle boots. I'm open for lace, zip, or pull on, but I don't want elastic. I've kind of been looking at these: Frye Boots

But throw some suggestions at me. It needs to be at probably $250 or less.

i don't think those Frye boots look nice. if you can spend $250 for a pair of ankle boots, then go to yoox.com and find a pair of moma boots or enrico fantini boots.

yoox has them w/ the cheaper price. but i think they don't have your size now James. i saw a couple pairs of them in smaller sizes at yoox before.

^they make them every season in different leathers and colors. the exact ones i want were never on yoox.
