my legs huuuuuuuuurt!

Fitness nuts: What do you do the few days after you lift when your muscles hurt so bad you can't move?

I did lower body on Wednesday [with the intention of going back today] and I still can't freaking move. The only position that feels okay is sitting here at my desk. I can't go up and down stairs and I can barely walk [I do this weird wadle thing].

I usually feel crappy after I lift, but it's never really been this bad because now that I'm finally out of season [for good] I'm working on seriously upping weights [can't really do that while in season bc I still need my muscles for speed training, etc]. Ibuprofen, unless I take 8, does nothing for me these days. Advice? TIA!!!

^aw what a cute smiley! haha

when I first started doing core I was in so much pain it was unbelievable--I know what you're going through with that, but boy does it pay off!

I ahve found that the best thing for that kind of hurt is a hot bath with epsom salt, about 2 cups. I feel ALOT better right after and the next day. A hot bath alone followed by light stretching helps a bit too until you can get some epsom salts.

Oh and bite the hair of the dog that bit you and excercsie more. THEN take an epsom salt bath.

Really, hit the treadmill. IMO, it's the ONLY thing that will help me a day or two after legs. And I SO know what you mean... the worst is trying to sit down on the potty and having NO strength to do so! Anyway, water and get the blood moving again.

Oh, I now see that Michelle has already said the same damn thing....

^ LOL Or god help you when you have to pee right after your workout and you are still shaking and you literally fall on top of the toilet seat, no sitting motion even formed, then pry yourself off. Sometime I have to roll off.

Or what about when you hurt so bad and one of your kids bumps your thigh or wants to ride horsey on your legs. Frostee and I were just discussing this phenomenon, what a treat!

^ Oh my gosh, I can't tell you how many times I've said to my 4 year old... Sorry baby, but momma just can't do ___ right now. OR heard her say Momma, what's the matter with your legs? You're walkin funny.

But yes, the toilet this is the worst!!!! Especially a public rest room... and I'm a bit of a germ freak.
Good stuff, too funny!

Instead of running, try low-impact stuff like the elliptical. It's great for flushing debris from your legs.

Also, I just read a study that suggested that coffee is better than OTC painkillers for relieving DOMS pain. I can't comment because I drink cofffee daily in the morning, but it might be worth a try.

Generally you do not need to lift so much that you can't function though...

I'm getting back to heavy lifting now, after a 2.5 month hiatus. I did legs on Wednesday and I'm on my 2nd day of increased pain!!!!

After I got home the day of, I soaked in a hot tub. I did not use epsom salts, so I will try this next time! I really ought to go the the gym right now and do the elliptical, like Rivkah suggested, if it will take away this pain!!

Kim's description of her legs reminds me of myself 2 minutes after crossing the finish line of my first marathon. Legs were absolutely unfunctional for the days to follow especially going up and down stairs!

Well said as usual Rivkah

I lift legs until I feel like I am going to die. Legs will make you grow muscle everywhere due to the fact that they release more then twice as much testosterone as any other bodypart when training them.

So a good rule of thumb is to do a lagging bodypart right after legs to help with growth. I still ache days later, but not enough to inhibit my everyday movement. I would do a couple of things

I would take glucosamine for joint support ( although it will take 2-3 months to see a major difference)

Ensure that you get a good nights sleep. 8 hours minimum and keep your sleep patterns regular

Always use a good multivitamin. This is so understimated for growth/recovery its unreal. People who train hard and heavy need much more nutrients in them then a normal person, and vitamins are a must. You simply can not remove all the " free radicals" that damage your muscle without it and a good diet

Take 5 grams daily of an L-Glutamine powder

A good creatine supplement will aid your recovery and give you a boost. I would take Kre-alkalyn creatine as it doesnt convert into a waste product ( creatinine) and therefore doesnt affect your liver function. And it also doesnt create any bloat or stomache upset, which regular monohydrate is known for

Hey CUTUP or Rivkah,
do either of you know anything about Kre-a-fem? It's marketed as the chick creatine... no bloat! I'm a product whore through and through so I had to try it. Haven't had it long enough to see/feel the difference between it and kre-alkalyn.

Just curious?
Thanks,
Jenn

^ You guys are the BEST!

And yeah, the absolute WORST is having to pee in a public restroom.. and it's impossible to squat. Next to the absolute worst is having to walk back up to my dorm immediately after lifting and not being able to make it up all of the stairs.

I've been stretching every night and trying to move about in a regular manner, but jesus, it sucks. I'm addicted to the post-workout burn that I feel after doing upper body, but damn, lower body sucks.

I have the toilet problem too. Especially now cause I lost all the muscle in my legs from my knee surgery lol. I find myself holding onto the walls in the stalls to support myself haha.

I usually either keep working out or go in a hot tub with powerful jets. If you have a bf get him to give you a massage

If you want no bloat, use the Kre-Alkalyn creatine. There is a seller on ebay who charges a fantastic price on a bottle of 240 caps.

It is kre-alkaln creatine, but it's got some other junk in it...
calcium 150 mg
black cohosh extract 50 mg
soy isoflavone extract 50 mg
magnesium 40 mg
iron 8 mg
coQ10 2 mg

looks like they just "chick"ed it up? thoughts?

and hubby eats the kre-alkaln I used to until I found this. Again, I haven't taken it long enough to feel a difference... and now I have to cut ALL herbs until after my surgery.

thanks! Hop you guys had fun last night~

Kre Alkalyn 1500 by Sci-Fit is great. And that womens brand basicly just throws in a bunch or other stuff probably for a huge increase in price.

Steelcityfitness on ebay has a great deal on them. And its the only brand of creatine that I have used that actually lives up to the massive strength gains/ and recovery period without bloating, gas and stomach upset. Just be sure to take it on a relatively empty stomach for quick absorbtion around half an hour before you start hitting the weights.

I have ordered from them numerous times, always very prompt, and they also have a website to get it from them directly. Heres the link

Sci Fit Kre-Alkalyn (Creatine)1500 - (240 Capsule) [SFIT-KREALKALYN-240CAPS] - $30.00 : Steel City Fitness, Helping to Build a Better You
