These are not my words but I find that I agree with this...........
"The reason Americans pay so much for drugs is nearly all other countries use price controls at levels that do not adequately fund new drug development. The vast majority of those costs, therefore, are paid by American consumers since we do not have price controls. A new, non-orphan drug costs between $200-400 million to get to market. When you include the fact only one of ten drug ideas make it to market, the average cost for each new marketed drug approaches the $800 million number made popular by the Tufts Institute study."
If there is no incentive for new drug development none will be developed. It sucks but the US foots the bill for the rest of the world as far as drug development goes because the companies know what it can not make in other countries can be made up by charging people in the US more.
