In the 12-page report, which gives accounts of the incident from the perspective of eight different officers who were present Monday afternoon, Officer Nicole Mallo writes that Meyer would only resist officers when cameras were present.

"As (Meyer) was escorted down stairs (at the University Auditorium) with no cameras in sight, he remained quiet, but once the cameras made their way down stairs he started screaming and yelling again," Mallo wrote.

Mallo was one of two officers who actually rode in the vehicle as Meyer was escorted to the Alachua County jail, and she said said he told them during the ride: "I am not mad at you guys, you didn't do anything wrong, you were just trying to do your job," according to Mallo's account.

Mallo also wrote in her report that he asked, at one point, if cameras would be present at the jail.
So an attention seeking SOB gets what he was craving. Perhaps the taser wasnt' the right thing to use.

Old School means of getting people to comply.

In NYC that is not allowed as it causes Positional Asphyxia and can kill you due to not being able to breathe. A police officers utmost responsibility is the preservation of human life. Being tazed is not harmful, and was a good choice in getting him to comply.

Guys, they wanted to apprehend him with as little force as possible, sure they coud have beat him, but that would have caused much more damage than a basically harmless after being used tazer.

But I have a feeling either way you people would have been crying about it whether they maced, used physical force, or used their baton on him.

The way I read it, there was objection to the use of a taser - in THIS instance.

And I tend to agree.

Yeah the guy was a bit worked up,
But he wasn’t doing a home invasion, or waving a gun around like a complete nutjob.

He was asking a few questions in a public forum.

So how about we all let go of the absurd hypothetical scenarios, and focus on reality.

Maybe Kerrys press statement was politically correct (well of course its going to be, he’s actions and attitude surrounding the incident would come under close scrutiny)

But the general thrust from Kerry’s statement is true.

Any politician worth their salt, should have EASILY have been able to cope with those questions

There was absolutely no need for the campus cops to intervene when they did.

If things didn’t calm down after Kerry was given the opportunity to respond, then sure, I think the police would have been justified in taking SOME action.

But from what I saw, I reckon there was absolutely no way a tasering was necessary.

If all them cops couldn’t handle one scrawny lil commie student, without the use of a weapon, then I think they need to have a serious look at other career options.
The majority of people who go to the extreme in these cases ALWAYS have a complaint whenever a taser or force is used. They always suggest there is another way to solve the problem but they never offer any advice as to how they should do their jobs. I know not everyone here is saying force should never be used, my post was directed at extremists views that where said.

This kid was carried away, resisted, he was grabbed under the waist, he resisted, adn then when he got loose, he faced off like he was going to fight.

And if 4 cops grabbed him at once what would you say, that they are doing their jobs properly? I doubt it, you would say " why do they need 4 cops to drag off 1 puny student"?

This guy didnt get tazed because of the questions he was asking, he got tazed because of his behavior. Jesus, do people think anyone who doesnt side with a political speaker will get tazed or ejected from the premisis?

As long as the people stay calm and dont act like idiots, they can say whatever they want to. Even if it goes against what a speaker or presenter is saying.

So now we should start tazing everyone who gets a little loud just incase he doesnt have gun. Is that the suggestion here?
And cmon, a bit melodramatic here?

You know I in no way meant that anyone who gets rowdy should always be tazed.

I respect your views even if they differ from my own, but thats blown way out of proportion

I watch enough news to know that a few incidents a year throughout my country and yours is not enough to warrant anything. You do realize the police officers are humans and they might not react in the best way to please everyone right?

I just wanted to point one thing out first, being tazed in fact can be harmful even in young populations.

If you have a pre-existing cardiovascular condition such as an arrhythmia (e.g. chronic atrial fibrillation, etc), the added electrical shock wave has the potential, but not guaranteed, to do harm.

Bye. ** 2009. Neg away at my post as you see fit. **

That is true, I have designed them before BUT consider the alternatives and what they might do to your body (mace, nightstick, punches, etc....) I think they basically have to choose the "lesser evil" to use on the guy.

I agree with Infinite42, Cutup and Sultry. +1s to those opinions, -1s to many others.

The guy was being disruptive, that is NOT freedom of speech to be disruptive, he needed to grow up and take responsbility for his actions. His MANNER of speaking was not respectful, if you want freedom of speech to say what you want, then do it RESPECTFULLY!

He deserved to be tasered in my opinion.

Crap, I wrote like a whole page thinking it was the college incident about tasering...lol, oh well this will be easier to answer...

We live in Democracy, unless you are a women(Women's Rights) or a black person(Civil Rights) a white(or any other race) male can legally be tasered for what ever the reason.

I personally think such incidents like this should be more careful, especially now living in the YouTube age, and every cellphone able to record video or take pictures...Yeaaah...Cross the line mr. cop and your face is on YouTube by the afternoon.

Yeah but thats in rare cases. Its also possible to fall off your computer chair right now and crack your head open and die. OC Spray can be lethal to those with respitory conditions, and a baton strike intended for the joints that loses its mark due to the persons movement and hits them in the head or neck can kill them as well.

Nothing in this world is absolute, but a TASER is IMO the most humane way to gain compliance with an uncooperative subject.

LOL

I had a forensic class in college and we had to read a book by a ME or a Coroner (I can't remember which). There was a section about strange deaths that had to be explained to family members and there was a case of a man hooking his balls up to an ac adapter to get off and shocking them. Well.......it killed him and someone had to explain it to his mother. So watch it buddy!

I inherently question the actions of anyone in a authoritative position, just because they are in that position. That may sound really cheesy, but It's true.

That entirely depends on the situation, I can be pretty damn stubborn, but I wouldn't be rude in the first place.
