I think the WWD Staff said it best when they called Dan and Dean Caten’s runway walk for Fall 2009 “a kiss-off to the recession”. With huge Jackie-O glasses, freshly done dye jobs and Venti Americano cups in hands, the models at Dsquared2 were looking more Denise Richards than Bryant Park.

The design duo that is Dsquared rocked out their show with huge heels, newsboy caps, plaid shirts and even pvc leggings. Yes, you better believe it, they didn’t miss the opportunity to pretty much pour in every trend that is around today, butI will say that it was all done with an easy LA-flair, that only the Caten’s (and Rachel Zoe…ok, and every stylist on the west coast…) can turn out.

When looking at this season as compared to their Spring 2009 RTW show, I do see a beautiful continuity beginning to glow for the Catens, however. Last season, with glossy long haired models strutting down the catwalk (same glasses) and luxe (read: rich) air, we felt Hollywood too. Yet, it was as if at that point we were watching the film of Charlie’s Angels. The girls might as well have been holstering rifles! This season though, not the case. This season, it’s like we are seeing Demi, Cam, Drew and Lucy Liu stepping off the set and out and about the town. Do you see it? Is it just me? Or maybe it’s the Starbucks cups…

Regardless, I love the looks. Even if it is everything that we are already seeing on everyone…

I’d wear it! (Oh…wait a minute…oops! I already do!)

Welcome to PART II of the my ferocious little series on travel: DESTINATION DENIM.

Over the past couple of weeks, the number one most requested shopping city on your very list?

Los Angeles! Yeah baby! Are you shocked? Yeah. Didn’t think so.

So, here we go kids…let’s shop.

Oh, but before we begin… One request: I know that each of you are fabulous and stylish (and everyone else’s personal shopper in your own right–oh jeeeez I certainly am!). However, keep in mind that there are literally thousands of you and only one tiny lone Minnyb over here. So, if there is a store that I have inadvertently left out on my list, I apologize in advance and ask that you please simply add it to the comments section at the end, know that I can not shop everywhere (although I try) and that, furthermore, if you send me one round trip tic to LA (passenger name, one, “MinnyB”) I will be more than happy to check-it-OUT! Mwah!

So, back to the list:

1. American Rag Cie

150 S. La Brea Ave.

Los Angeles, CA

(323) 935-3154

www.amrag.com

So Los Angeles is absolutely filled with places to shop for denim. It is hard to name a number one spot. I am just listing what are, in my opinion, 10 great spots instead of ranking them in top ten order (oh yeah, giant cop out!). Yet, there has to be one that gets slotted at numero uno, and American Rag Cie on La Brea takes the cake. So, why does this “World Denim Bar” rank? Well, “Amrag” as its fans endearingly term it, not only has two huge locations in Southern Cali, but a pretty sweet locale in San Fran too. You can find all of the quality bests here (from Helmut Lang to Earnest Sewn) and you are likely to score a killer pair of DSquared2’s or even some Cheap Monday’s. Cheap Monday you say? Yep, you read me right! You can pick up a $65 pair right along side that aforementioned $300+ pair! And, if it’s vintage or custom that you crave, just shuffle on past their home décor, music and café sections, and you’ll run right into those racks too!

2. Jeany

1302 Montana Ave
Santa Monica, CA 90404

(310) 255-0808

www.jeanyint.com

Jeany is one of the hottest spots in LA to head when you’re looking for that perfect fit denim. With an in-house tailor and the best up and coming brands always in stock, they definitely have a huge cult following. Located in the heart of Santa Monica, Jeany is not the largest space in terms of square footage, but then again, I’ve always prefered a boutique experience anyhow, what about you? Some people I know have dogged the service at Jeany calling it “slow” at best, but other reviews I’ve read praised the staff as being “patient” and “helpful”. In my own experience, the store ran smoothly and my jeans were hemmed in a timely manner. With a selection of over 200 styles, and a bright airy atmosphere…I think we might let a day or two of bad moods…slide.

3. Planet Blue

3835 Cross Creek Rd
Malibu, CA 90265
(310) 317-9975
shopplanetblue.com

Planet Blue might not be everyone’s top pick, and it certainly is not retailing exclusively denim. However, the disclaimer out of the way, I have to say j’adore PB. With 5 stores around the town–and one devoted to only men’s–Planet Blue is an absolute mecca for not only your jeans, but for everything you want to pair them up with too. Current Elliot, Joie, Rich & Skinny, and Genetic Denim all line the racks of their online boutique, and, in the actual stores, you’ll find much MUCH more (including Antik, Chip & Pepper, Frankie B., J Brand and True Religion). Yet, if you are searching for a sale rack, steer clear of this bad boy! You will be paying full price at PB. And, with a scene that absolutely screams “LA!”, don’t expect the staff to be fawning all over you either. The gorgeous model-esque guys and gals that work at PB are used to people dropping plenty of cash at the register with little to no help at all. In fact, if you hang around inside for long enough, you may even see a Vanessa or a Courtney heading out with a bag full of goodies. P.S., if you can’t make it to LA, do check out their website…and next month click on “style me” for some awesome shopping tips and wardrobe fixes! Can’t wait!

4. Ron Herman at Fred Segal

8100 Melrose Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90046
Phone: (866) 654-4577

www.fredsegal.com

www.ronherman.com

The Fred Segal story starts out that “for Fred Segal the emphasis was always on service, quality and selection…” After many a trip there myself, I can say that I agree with the sentiment. I like the people. I like the stuff. I can actually remember my first trip to the Melrose store as if it were yesterday. I was with my mother and I purchased a pair of Frankie B. jeans and bottle of Child perfume. I was 19 years old. We ate salads and sipped beet juice in the café. I was a student at USC and I truly felt like I belonged inside an Aaron Spelling episode. Come to think…I may even have seen Tori. When you head into Ron Herman on Melrose, and meander through the different departments there, you will just have to admit, especially if you are a tourist (as I will so classify myself on that very day in the beginning of my life in LA), that there is just something about the experience that makes you feel a little bit magical—a little bit extravagant. To me, it is everything that shopping in Los Angeles should be: a little bit of jewelry, a little bit of lunch, and a lot of denim! The jean bar at Ron Herman is amazing. Period. I’m actually dying to return to LA strictly to head right there. With ACNE, Ksubi and Loomstate lining the shelves now (brands they never had back in my college days) I’m pretty much worked up just thinking of it! In the meantime, online shopping it is!

5. Kitson LA

115 S. Robertson Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90048
(310) 859-2652

www.shopkitson.com

You MUST have heard of Kitson LA by this point, right? Although the store is less than 10 years old, it has swiftly grown to be one of the most well known spots for picking up not only your denim in LA, but your candles, tee’s and panties too. I personally have shopped at the original Robertson Blvd. location many a time and am a fan of kitschy books, and gag gifts that lie side by side the Kasil’s and PRPS’s. Robertson Blvd. is one of the best streets in LA, imo, for shopping, chow and sunshine in general actually. Stop into the Newsroom Cafe or Ivy if you want something a little more fancy and then head out for a day of shopping. When you’re done with the Genetics and such in Kitson (which, btw, has quite a few other locations other than Robertson—so don’t forget to check the website), head on down the road to these other stores too…

Yes, that’s right! More Denim on ROBERTSON BLVD STRAIGHT AHEAD!

“Over-dyed purple denims”

“Defiled refinery”

“The Ghost of Grunge”

“The spirit of Kurt Cobain”

Enter the world of Charles Anastase Fall 2009 RTW!

It was all very serious…the build up was intense; can’t you tell from the collection notes alone? PR teams deemed Anastase’s latest and greatest as something of a psychological look into the current political occasion…Anastase himself commented that his collection, including a debut of menswear, was to express, “his positive feelings about America’s new president.”

However, after a slew of mixed reviews, it is clear that Anastase did not exactly make his mark as intended. WWD termed the oddly tiered tutus as “sweet”. Hillary Alexander begged for a dumbing down next season, calling out the chaos of his charade as “drowned in the wordy, surreal, psycho-babble”. Sorry President Obama! Apparently Mr. Anastase was very dismayed that anyone read his work as “sweet-psycho-babble”…

To me, some of the skirts did pop. I liked them. A denim ruffled skirt a la this vintage Fendi suede piece that has been hanging in my closet for years certainly caught my eye. And, since I already believe in Anastase, I was partial to his palette as well. I actually loved the purple against the poppy bright.

I know that Anastase was reaching here (actually I would call it overreaching), yet I did not necessarily mind the quixotic effort. After all, I always appreciate a parade (note: not a charade) that makes me think, don’t you?

Here are some of the denim selections from Charles Anastase’s runway. However, the entire collection is much, much more than denim, and I encourage you view it in its entirety here, courtesy of the folks over at style.com.

So let’s talk about Twenty8Twelve, shall we? Were you happy enough to just finally have a runway collection out of the Miller girls after 5 long years? Or, did you indeed adore what they did? I know I did. There were sentiments, however, hailing from pretty much every camp possible as Savannah and Sienna marched the most notable fresh faces in the industry down the tent floor last week: Jordan Dunn, Karlie Kloss, Constance Jablonski and Ali Stephens…all “oozing with hip”. Some felt that it lacked any individuality…just another line of lovely off the rack rags…yet, others saw it as original and enigmatic.

Twenty8Twelve, which I place in that big ol’ box of fav femme duos (ahem, yes, you know it–Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman & Keren Craig, oh, and have I ever mentioned Vena Cava here before…no…really?), is backed by Pepe Jeans manufacturer and retails in two stand alone stores in London, as well as TopShop of course. The collections are most recognizable for there striking balance of bohemian wearability, cool luxury, and an ever present dip of rock and roll too. Savannah called her 2009 showing, ” Pirates of the road meet Grace Jones,” and Sienna agreed that, “It started off as a grunge collection in one direction, then as a glam collection in the other, and then it all met somewhere in the middle.”

If I had to sum up the collection in just one word, I would call it satisfying. Oh so satisfying. I’m not going to sit here and do something crazy like lump it with Lanvin or enlist it to Alexander (Wang that is), but I will tell you ladies, that, there is nothing here that you can not use. And, there is nothing that you can not find here either. Skinny Jean? Check. Hot Pant? Check. Bootie? Check. Jumper? Check. LBD? T-Shirt? Basic blouse, scarf, trench? Check. Check. AND check! And the list goes on…!

As I have previously commented in other discussions, and on other designers, oh, how I do love a collection that makes me *think*!

However, a girl can not deny that she also just flips for a collection that (and at a pretty good price point too) makes her shop.

Enjoy Twenty8Twelve by S. Miller. I’m looking forward to more now that it an official member of the runway tribe in London!

So, over the next few of weeks, we’re going to be covering a few hot spots on the map—major cities and major denim shopping spots alike–with a new mini series on the DenimBlog called “Destination Denim”. Suggestions or places that you’d like targeted? Just let us know and we’ll hit ‘em up for you!

First up…the most obvious choice…the Big Apple! Here are some of my favorite shopping spots for denim in New York City:

1. The Earnest Sewn Co.

821 Washington Street, New York, NY 10079

www.earnestsewn.com

Welcome to the world of The Earnest Sewn Company. The store itself, located in Manhattan’s meatpacking district, is not only a super trendy place to land on a Saturday afternoon, but is definitely a piece architectural eye candy too. Packed with rolls of hand picked fabrics, Earnest Sewn denim is custom made right there in the 2,500 square foot facility. Whether you’re searching for raw, selvedge, a classic boot cut, or for children’s or men’s, the Earnest Sewn Flagship has quickly become one of the most heralded denim destinations around for, well, everything. So do yourself a favor and stop into Keith McNally’s Pastis on 9th, have a Quiche Lorraine with your best pal, and then gear up for a couple of went spent hours indoors on Washington Street. However, don’t forget to bring that check book along…because no one said that these jeans would be cheap!

2. Jean Shop

424 West Broadway, New York, NY 10012

www.worldjeanshop.com

Four years ago Eric Goldstein, along with partners Barry Perlman and Gene Montesano, created Jean Shop—a revolutionary thought process on denim at the time—stemming from the finest Japanese and Selvedge traditions. Sources from Louis Vuitton and GQ magazine have already called the shop one of the best stores in Manhattan, and their loyal clientele includes a growing number of celebrities, such as singer Bryan Adams. With all of their denim processed right on the premises, Jean Shop is the perfect place to look for dry denim, or for that classic one-wash you are craving. If you want something a little bit off the beaten path—something made to order perhaps—Jean Shop’s got that covered too. The design consultants at Goldstein’s place will work with you one-on-one to get that ideal look, but if you are not in New York, don’t fret. They do phone consults too! Check them out on the web or if you live in the area, just pop in.

P.S. They’ve got tons of awesome vintage pieces too, including boots, leather and denim jackets.

3. OAK

208 North 8th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211

www.oaknyc.com

So really, Oak is not only one of the best stops around for denim, but just all around one of the best stops in town, period. With over 60 brands for women and 50 for men, and at least a quarter of those devoted solely to denim, Oak is a powerhouse—to say the least. Not only do they have their own pretty extraordinary line (a collection of denim, footwear and jewelry), but they also carry iconic collections from Helmut Lang and Comme des Garcons as well as edgier designers too (like the remarkable duo of Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai that is Vena Cava, Alexander Wang and ACNE). And, lucky for you, in you live in Manhattan, not Williamsburg, they’ve got a location there also—right on Elizabeth Street in the heart of Nolita. And, even luckier for you, if you don’t live anywhere near New York City, they’ve got you hooked up with ecommerce as well. Log on, check out their ridiculously cool editorials (November 2008 dubbed “Oakalypto”…yeah…I know…), browse their buyers’ genius picks and then return to denimblog.com and tell us what you think!

4. Blue in Green

8 Greene Street, New York, NY 10013

www.blueingreensoho.com

Men! Pay attention! You are always asking us to give you a better place to shop, a better place to find your perfect jeans, somewhere where women are not the main focus…right? Well here it is. Blue in Green is probably the number 1 place in New York (and if you are into online shopping, then maybe on the web too) for men’s raw, dry and selvedge denim. Offering the absolute finest in quality denim with brands like Samurai Raw Selvedge and Evisu Japan, Baracuta, Naked & Famous, Eternal and even Sugar Cane, Blue in Green is a complete “men’s lifestyle store”. When you head on in to Blue in Green, you won’t have to worry about alteration, hemming, or even a hat boys…they’ll have you taken care of at every angle. Oh, and I think I should mention, I’ve heard the ladies working there aren’t so bad either!

5. Bloomie’s in SoHo

504 Broadway, New York, NY 10012

www.bloomingdales.com

I had to give you an old standard, right? Just in case you are ever in dire straits of a pair of jeans immediately, and boutique shopping is just not an option (just in case of course, I mean, who pops into Bloomie’s for no good reason, right? Ha!)…well then scoot on down to Broadway! I would not recommend 1PM on a Saturday for this tourist’s haven of course, but grabbing a pair on a Monday after work? Dropping in on the way to drinks on Friday? No problem girls! Definitely test out this old school—but totally new—department store classic, where you’ll find just about the largest selection of designer denim in the city. We’re talking about 7 For All Mankind, Ralph Lauren, AG by Adriano Goldschmied, Burberry, Theory, DSquared2, Citizens of Humanity, Hudson, J Brand, James Jeans, Antik Batik, Paige Premium, Rock & Republic, Joe’s Jeans, Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, William Rast, True Religion, Anlo and MORE. Ahh…sigh…so many jeans to wear, so little time to wear them all…

And while we’re on the topic of so much denim, here’s 5 more!

6. Barney’s Co-op Upper West Side

644 Broadway, New York, NY 10012

Hot off the press from WWD is the news that Hilary Duff is about to collaborate on the design for a collection with DKNY Jeans. The line, which has been dubbed Femme for DKNY Jeans, is targeted to women in their 20′s, who, like Duff, aspire to that flirty yet laid back style.

In her recent interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Duff said that in her opinion, “One of the hardest things [was] to come up with [the collection's] name.“ She continued that, “Femme works really well and explains the line perfectly as feminine but tough all at the same time. It’s aggressive, but in a good way.“

We’ve all seen Hilary herself in that exact same light I think! There may have been a cat fight or two, but the girl has truly remained a class act…

“There is truly something in this line for every girl whose styles change every day, like mine does,” said Duff. “Sometimes I want to wear tight leather leggings with a big plaid shirt, or other days, I want to wear a floral-print dress but make it look edgy. Some days I like to be a bit more punk rock, but in a girly way. I love wearing layers and scarves, and I love that his line can be mixed and matched just the way you want it to. I think it’s the perfect line for young girls who can’t afford to buy a lot of clothes these days.“

Although we haven’t seen the lookbook yet, the sketches are looking nice. And, from her description, I have to admit, I’m pretty excited to shop the collection too. Check it out:

When I heard that Junya Watanabe had pulled together, once again, a remarkable collection for Spring, I closed my eyes and tried to picture just what he might have in store. Known for stark period and cultural influence, always a jacket and skirt in site, and never without a hat or headdress of course, Watanabe endlessly produces great shows, often in the vain of a curatorial feat no less.

This season, being no exception–many of the same elements persisting–we at the Denimblog, are happy to report, that Watanabe took a stab a something different, including our favorite indigo tones too.

With a clear African affect, inlaid lace, gingham, flowered and paisley prints, Watanabe toiled with not only the Boyfriend jean, but with layered, fitted, and cut up skirts and tiny little military styled jackets as well. The head pieces are purely couture, in my opinion, but, that said, they definitely herald a look of just the home sewn glory that patch work denim calls for (a la Kate Moss’s recent foray into pieced together fabrics).

It seems to me that this exact African influence might just be one of greatest references that we’ve seen on the runways for Spring. Have you noticed that as well? If you’re interested in the theme, take some time to review Louis Vuitton’s Spring Collection and notice the subtle inclination toward specific fabrics, patterns, and a drifting escape from classical western simplicities. I will also mention that Ralph Lauren’s RTW collection was falling that way too, with a certain Safari ease.

Watanabe’s collection of fab denim and tribal detailing may not be an everyday something in your wardrobe–this I already know. In fact, I might venture to say that for most, it might be a never-day occurrence in your wardrobe! Yet, even if you are going to sit on the side lines with this one, can you deny its artistic subtlety and brilliance? I, for one, absolutely can not.

Yet another celebrity and singer is moving onto the denim fashion scene. None other than country star Toby Keith, famous for his head to toe denim looks and country swagger, is now also the name and face behind a new line of menswear–that will most likely retail at a lower price point–somewhere from $20 to $60.

The line, which will feature not only jeans and other denim pieces (jackets and button downs too), will also include t-shirts, polo shirts, baseball hats and even leather wrist straps and bandanas for the men out there who really want to channel that down home look. The line, appropriately named “TK Steelman”, will debut on February 18th at Keith’s Vegas restaurant “I Love This Bar & Grill” (after his song of course) located in the famous Harrah’s.

Sorry guys, no pics for now…but, I bet if you close your eyes and conjure up an image of TK himself, you’ll pretty accurately be able to imagine what men ages 24-55 are going to be buying at Target, Wal-Mart and even Macy’s when they pick up some of the new TK Steelman line starting in March.

Di-Amanda Flower Petals Necklace by D&D Creations

Di-Amanda Inc., an Ontario, Canada based company, is really pushing denim to the limit with a new trend. No, I’m not talking about the rise or the leg opening here, not even close. I’m talking about a trend that is just a little bit…well…smaller.

As you’ve already guessed by my very obvious blog title…Di-Amanda is a jewelry company. Their denim themed designs are each hand crafted from .925 silver and many are highlighted by diamonds too. The jewelry comes in all different variations and shapes ranging from pendants to necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings as well. Prices for Di-Amanda items range from as low as $30 for some plainer pieces that you might be able to find on ebay to $1000+ for more heavily jeweled pieces at retail locations.

Di-Amanda Buckle Ring

Owned and operated by D&D Creations, the artistic voice behind the company is none other than famed international jewelry entrepreneur, Airy Ho. Visit D&D online and check out Ho’s designs on the web, as well as locate stores in your area: DD-Creations.com

Di-Amanda Heart Earrings with Diamonds

Di-Amanda and Airy Ho are not the only Denim Jewelry Designers out there though. There are other companies who are following in their path. If you’re into going green, for instance, Denim Designs Jewelry is another manufacturer, that uses recycled denim, crafting blue jeans into solid stone-like pieces. You can visit them on the web at DenimDesignsJewelry.com

Solid Stone Pendant from Recycled Denim by Denim Jewelry Designs $10 on sale

Or, if a denim watch is what you are looking for, check out the home made designs from jeanetiks.com (pronounced genetics).

Denim Watch from Jeanetiks $19.99

So, what do you think ladies? Are you going to be wearing denim accents on your fingers and lobes? Or maybe you think this is just the thing for your designer-denim-wearing-girlfriend for Valentine’s Day guys? Hmmmmmm…I don’t know…

If you are into something a little lighter as we head into the last few weeks of winter, this might be just the thing to put that bounce back in your step. Personally, I think they would look amazing with a cozy cream cashmere cowl neck sweater, or even a woolly black wrap. Throw on a pair of warm wedges and you’re good to go!

If they are a little too summery for you though, grab a pair now while they are available and wear the 5-pocket peg leg style all summer long with your strappy sandals and tanks. They are retailing for $180 and only at National Jean Company with FREE SHIPPING too!
