Here is a pretty interesting video about advertising and the portrayal of women. It has some good points and some pretty solid examples to back up her points. What do you think about the video, is it a bit too over the top, or something that should be focused on?

UPDATE: We used Kiva to find a group of people in the Dominican Republic who are starting a clothing store. Hopefully our loan will help them out.

So its Blog Action Day today. Basically a day to focus the web on important issues. I just wanted to drop a quick post as a reminder that poverty is a very real thing. If you make more than $40k a year you are wealthier than 95% of the world!

So today when you enjoy your multiple room house, with air conditioning, and you get in your car to drive eat with friends at a restaurant, there are people who don’t have any of those things. Who live in a one room house, without air condition, without a car, and without the ability to buy food at a restaurant.

So for today, DenimBlog will take the small steps to fight poverty by

- giving $100 towards our non-profit EffectiveProjects.org (we are saving up money to dig wells in Haiti)
- invest $100 towards the poor with Kiva.org (a great way to foster businesses and get people out of poverty)

We would love your help as well. Please click chip in to quickly send a donation by PayPal to help us dig wells in the third world.

Shopping in NYC

This is our first of hopefully a number of travel shopping posts. We’ll start with the Big Apple.

BLM14 our resident NYC shopping and denim expert recommends the following

Dont buy any clothes here on the street unless it’s from a yard sale, they’re almost exclusively fake.

For shopping, you can go ANYWHERE pretty much but there are two major concentrations of shopping and they’re both REALLY big. The area bounded by the bowery on the east, broadway on the west, 14th street on the north, and canal on the south houses a HUMUNGOUS amount of shopping: Barneys, 3 diesel stores, j lidheberg, a levis store, lounge, atrium, blue and green, cloak, replay, evisu, bape, APC, puma, bloomingdales, gstar, and about a thousand other places are all within that area.

Fifth avenue from about 42nd to 59th as well as lexington in the same area and all the sidestreets are full of all kinds of really upscale shopping – Dior, D&G, Escada, Saks 5th avenue, barneys, bloomingdales, and all kinds of super expensive little boutiques are in there.

There’s lots more but if you’re here for a weekend I would just focus on the soho area. Check the superfuture map – it’s a little out of date but it shows you the general area involved and how much shopping there is:

superfuture :: new york :: soho :: map
superfuture :: new york :: nolita :: map
superfuture :: new york :: lower east :: map
superfuture :: new york :: west village :: map

There’s even some stuff that’s not on those maps too…

EDIT: We recently came across this excellent google map of a bunch of places to shop.

high res version1. First, go to paypal.com and login2. If you’ve already registered a credit card with your paypal account, then skip to step number 3. If you haven’t registered a CC with your paypal, I’ll show you how. (This is also how you edit CC information, should you ever need to do so.)

2a. After you’ve logged in, under the “My Account” tab, select the “Profile” sub-tab.

2b. In the middle column, “Financial Information,” select “Credit Cards.”

2c. On this screen, you’ll see any credit cards you’ve registered with paypal listed, and buttons the Add, Remove, Edit, and Make Primary. Chances are you’ll want to select “Add”. You can use Edit to update information for an existing CC and Remove to, well, remove a CC.

2d. After selecting “Add,” simply follow the instructions and fill in the required info. The page says confirming your info only takes about 30 seconds after you complete this page, but seeing as I don’t have a second CC to register and I don’t remember how long it took my card, I can’t confirm that. I’m pretty sure it will be quick though, so you can probably begin using it almost right away.

3. Now, how to actually pay with your credit card when making a paypal transaction. Select the “Send Money” tab, and for the purposes of the HM, select the sub-tab “Pay Anyone.” (I don’t have any ebay auctions to pay for presently, but I don’t think using a CC to pay for an ebay auction would be much different than this process.)

3a. Fill in all the required info regarding your payment. (Note: Credit card payment only seems to be available if the value of the payment exceeds the funds present in your account, I think. Or that’s how it seems to be working for me to say the least. This makes me think that it will use your account funds first, then move to the CC?) Click “Continue.”

3b. The next page is the “Check Payment Details” page. About in the center of this page you see the “Source of Funds” section with a link to “More Funding Options.” Click “More Funding Options.”

3c. The “Funding Options” page lists all available sources for you to pay with. Select “Credit / Debit Card” and then from the drop-down menu be sure to select the card that you with to pay with. Then, select “Continue.”

3d. The next page is a confirmation screen. Select “Yes.”

3e. You are now returned to the “Check Payment Details” screen and you should see beneath “Source of Funds” a listing for your CC and how much it will be charged. (This was my first time going through this as well. I’m almost certain it will remove funds from your paypal account first, then move to your CC. I don’t know if you can re-configure this or not.)

We just got this pimpin new logo made for our blog. The goal was to use the shield/jeans pocket element form our wonderful HF Logo but to focus on the denim aspect a bit more. Super props to ever talented Mr. Louie Mantia for his great work and many many revisions.
