New year new trends! I’m always excited to see trend forecasts, especially denim trend forecasts. 2016 is going to be a big year for denim, it’s already started the year off with a bang and it can only go up from here. Denim has taken an interesting turn, going from tailored and tight to baggy and cropped with new trims and treatments that are ever changing. Right now 4 trends really stick out and are going to make a big impression this year, the coolest part? A lot of them are easy to find and some even easy to DIY. Come along, let’s look into the future of denim (this year)!

Not So Skinny

It was only a matter of time before loose fitting jeans made their way back into the trends. I’m personally waiting for the baggy, JNCO-esc pairs to start resurfacing, but I guess I’ll have to wait, we all have to ease into that one. For now, we have nice, loose fitting jeans that could be categorized as “Mom Jeans” or straight legged jeans and they look amazing with heels. These styles of jeans are easy to find at your local thrift shop but if you ain’t the thriftin’ kind, HERE are some good ones. Mom jeans hit big last year and have continued to make their way into outfits around you, but I’ve noticed a newer silhouette is gaining popularity. It’s a somewhat normcore jean, not too skinny and not too baggy, with no tapering and a straight down leg. Crippen has a lot of great styles with this fit.

Frayed/Unfinished Hems

I touched on this trend in my last post, stating that it brought me back to the jeans of the good ol’ 2000s. Where pop stars wore very little, their jeans sat very low, and we could all accomplish the frayed waistband at home. The modernized version of frayed denim is a little bit of a longer fray, on the bottom hems of jeans and also making its way into tops and jackets. It gives off a raw look with great texture and the long threads are a great way to mix it up.

Denim Tops

Denim tops would always be in the form of a lightweight chambray, maybe a button up or a semi button up, but rarely in the form of an actual top. I’m not saying it hasn’t been done but I’m saying it’s everywhere NOW. New silhouettes of denim tops are emerging left and right and I’m really obsessing over them. I love the boxy tanks, off the shoulder ruffles, long line shirts and wrap tops. These are just to name a few and how much are you swooning over these styles above?!

I mean, let’s face it, the Canadian tuxedo isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and I’m perfectly content with it. Denim on denim never gets old, it’s such a classic outfit and so easy to wear no matter what the pieces are that you pair together. Once again, it’s a big trend now and it will be for 2016. Don’t put those matching denim outfits away just yet, you’re going to be wearing them a lot this year too.
