Printed & Patched Denim Shorts

Denim shorts are obviously one of the hottest trends right now, as they are every time the Summer comes around. One thing that can get repetitive and boring though is wearing the same type of denim shorts each year. Why not mix it up a little?

I’ve noticed a rising trend in patched and printed denim shorts at the moment and there’s many brands doing their own take on the style. From subtle bleached shapes to full on wild and bright prints, from a little patch of denim to over the top fabric layers, one thing is for sure and that’s the fact that these shorts are here to make a statement, give a pop to your outfit and add a sense of fun to your overall look. Check out some of the coolest pairs below. They range from subtle to bold so there’s something for everyone!

RE/DONE Levi’s

To create the Hawaiian Collection by RE/DONE, the designers took their classic, vintage denim, boxy fit short and repaired the holes with cut up vintage Hawaiian shirts sourced from the same ÔÇÿrag houses’ as their jeans. Some shorts have had their holes repaired with the shirts, while others have had their pockets patched with the shirts. These shirts range in age from the 1950’s through the 1990’s. They were all made in the USA, with most originating in the Hawaiian Islands. The colorful shirts feature a range of motifs including indigenous Hawaiian plants, such as the Hibiscus flower, to the classic Hula prints. How cool is that? It’s a great way to go vintage and bold! One Teaspoon

These are a subtle take on a printed denim short with only a slight bleached star detailing. It’s still just enough to stand out though and be noticeable, but I think it’s light and sleek so it wont be too bold. These would be perfect for those of you who just want to dip your toes into the trend and not dive head first. Buy these shorts online at Shopbop.com.

True Religion

If you love camo print then I definitely recommend these ones! Just like their popular Casey camo jeans, True Religion have released the print in their iconic denim shorts too. Pairing these with a simple tank and some sandals or ankle boots is definitely the way to go! Buy these shorts online at Shopbop.com.

If you’re looking for something a little more bold and feminine, why not try these? Emblazoned with a colourful floral print these are ideal for wearing on picnics or visits to the part. Dressing them down is the best way to wear these so the print on the shorts is the focal point of the whole outfit. Buy these shorts online at Shopbop.com.

Joe’s Jeans

These Joe’s shorts are quite different to what we usually see. They remind me of a computer chip in a way with the little pixels on the print, but at the same time they have a slight Hawaiian vibe to them. If you have a more unique dress sense, these might be fun! Buy these shorts online at Shopbop.com.

Who doesn’t love Aztec print? It’s been a popular trend for many seasons now, especially within Isabel Marant collections, so why not try it in a subtle way with these Topshop denim shorts? Embroidered in a lighter blue stitching, these are great for taking the trend on in a non invasive way and perfect for wearing with double denim. Buy these shorts online at Topshop.com.

James Jeans

Much like the One Teaspoon shorts near the top, these James Jeans shorts feature bleached heart prints over the denim. I think it’s really feminine and cute, while standing out just enough to look fun. Espadrilles and a tee are great matches for these! Keep it casual. Buy these shorts online at Shopbop.com.

Stella McCartney

For those of you who aren’t afraid of print, jump into it head first with these Stella McCartney leopard print denim shorts. These are sure to get you noticed with the wild cat print in bright colours. My suggestions for these would be don’t wear stilettos and a crop top and opt for wedges or flat sandals and a simple tank top or blouse. You can run the risk of looking like Cat Slater (UK readers will know who this is!) if you do dress them up. Buy these shorts online at Shopbop.com.

Much like the RE/DONE Hawaiian shorts at the top, Topshop have done something similar. They have used printed floral fabric as the pocket bags which can be seen underneath the distressing on the hips. I think these are cute! The rise is super high too so they can really look girly and chic with a cropped top and wedges. Buy these shorts online at Topshop.com.

J Brand

This pair by J Brand remind me of a snow leopard and some black and white Aztec print. They are quite cool and will be suitable for those of you who have a tougher edge to your looks. Matching them with other black and white pieces, especially black boots, is a great option! Buy these shorts online at Shopbop.com.

Finally, we have another black and white pair by Topshop with a full blown Aztec print! I could definitely see these worn at Coachella with a white blouse and some black ankle boots, layered up with lots of jewellery. They make a statement but not in a bold way, more of a ‘those look cool’ kind of way. Buy these shorts online at Topshop.com.
