Layering Denim in Los Angeles

Fall tends to be everyone’s favorite season and I can most definitely see why. Aside from pumpkin everything, leaves turning beautiful colors, and a break from the heat, it’s the only other season besides Spring that you can mix your Summer and Winter wardrobe to make some killer outfits.

Fall is different in every city of course, in London and NY it cools down drastically, the south stays pretty humid, and LA…well, it’s like the desert moved in for a few months. It gets really hot (like heat wave of 100 degrees, hot), ridiculously dry (think bloody noses) and we get our lovely Santa Ana winds (aka our version of a Hurricane). I don’t know about anyone else in LA, but I always envy those East coasters in their coats, scarves and pumpkin spice lattes because I’m over here sweating worse than I did in August with anything I can find to cool me down.

On the flip side, being an LA native I’m used to this sort of weather and it actually is a little comforting when those Santa Ana’s kick up. To me, that’s our Fall and it gives me all sorts of warm and fuzzies inside, just like it would for someone sitting by their fireplace.

Layering can be tricky out here because it gets so hot and those temperatures can drop just as fast as they rise, so it’s better to layer lightly so you can shed it off or put more on if need be. I chose to highlight the key layering pieces for Fall in LA, mostly denim and a couple miscellaneous pieces, and what to pair them with. Of course, anything can be layered with a t-shirt or tank top, but the build is the best part. Take a look and try some of these out for yourself!

Denim Jacket

No matter where you live, a denim jacket is a MUST in every closet, but in LA, it’s the PERFECT jacket. It’s light enough to handle our weather almost all year long, so it’s pretty much an essential. Remember how a denim jacket goes with LITERALLY EVERYTHING? Oh yah, you need one.

Denim Vest

Denim vests have just recently circled back around and my favorite outfit for Fall is leggings, a plain tee or long sleeve and a denim vest over it. It’s comfortable, edgy, warms your core if it gets chilly and makes layering look effortless.

Jean Shorts

Both cut-offs and high waisted jeans were big this Summer so I wanted to highlight both. You can literally wear these pups until mid-November if you wanted to so it’s nice to keep them out. If it starts to cool down you can slap some knee high socks or boots and you’re good to go.

Misc.

These misc. items are staples in an LA wardrobe. Although we are not Seattle, we love our flannels just as much as the next NorCal-er. Flannels are great tied around your waist, open and over outfits, buttoned up as shirts or great layered under jackets. They are literally the most versatile piece you can have for Fall and the options of colors and styles are endless.

Lastly, we have the leather jacket. The leather jacket is another perfect LA piece. On the coldest day here, a leather jacket will keep you warm and if it doesn’t, all you need to do is put a hoodie on under it and you’re golden. It’s a great investment and you can throw it on over anything from a t-shirt and jeans, to your clubbing outfit.
