agnes 5 Denim Review: J Brand Agnes Pants In Vintage Navy

This weeks review is on J Brand’s new Agnes fit in the Vintage Navy Twill wash. I took a size down in these from my Houlihan in Vintage Olive size because I think the Agnes is better suited to being worn tighter than loose like the cargos. They do run the same as the Houlihan’s in Vintage Olive though so the sizing is pretty consistent.

I couldn’t work out if I liked these more than the Houlihan’s or not, I think I may like them equally but there is something about these Agnes that just make them so different and likable. I love the zippers on the lap area and the extra long zippers at the ankles, so combining those with the moto style stitching around the knee area, really makes these something special! The other thing that makes me slightly more partial to the Agnes over the Houlihan is the back pockets, these actually have pockets on the back where as the Houlihan just have flaps.

I find these to be a lot more skinny than the Houlihan though, but then that may be because I took a size down. They just feel skinnier in the calf area and at the ankles. The Twill fabric is amazing! It’s so soft and so stretchy, it’s one of my favourite fabrics around at the moment and the washes that J Brand have been bringing this Agnes cut out in are beautiful! I adore the Stealth wash but the Vintage Navy is definitely a lot more practical and wearable for every day errands.

I think, just like the Houlihan took the world by storm last season, the Agnes is definitely the cut to watch out for! We have already seen it on a lot of celebs but I can see it popping up a lot more now they have released it in many washes. I would absolutely recommend this cut to you if you haven’t yet tried it, if you are a fan of the Houlihan then you will adore these! I find it’s always nice to make a change in what you wear sometimes, as much as we love denim here at DenimBlog, it is nice to have a break and wear a different style and fabric from a denim brand every now and then. Buy J Brand Agnes pants at J Brand.

    hi Lorna

just wondering about the sizing, i have Jbrand houlihan in 24, it fit nicely but a bit loose..
do u think i should get the 24 ? i want it to look tight, like yours in the picture.

    thanks

Hi Widya, what wash are you getting in the Agnes? If you are getting a vintage wash and your Houlihan is a vintage wash, do they do 23? If the Houlihan in 24 is loose then you would probably need a 23 but I am unsure if they have that size.

    Hi lorna…

thanks so much for your reply
i want to get the vintage wash in agnes… my houlihan is size 24 but its bit loose…
maybe if they dont have 23, then ill get the 24….

I think a 23 or 24 would work ok, a 24 would probably fit just like your Houlihan :)

Thanks for your review – was looking everywhere for one about sizing/fit and I found you! I have a question though: my houlihan’s fit perfect (27) because I don’t like my skinny’s to be too tight (and trying to avoid muffin top!) – would 28′s in Agnes be too big for me? Found a pair online for a great price but it wouldn’t be great if I couldn’t wear them.

Hey, I think the 28′s would probably be too big for you, the Agnes is designed to fit a little tighter than the Houlihan and I have the same size in both. How loose are your Houlihan?

  12. wflam33 says:

My Houlihan’s are just fitted, not too tight and not too loose, which is how I like my fit of skinny’s. (advocates of the skinny’s would probably say my fit is a bit on the loose side) In the catalog pics, the Agnes look a bit tighter than I like them. I find if I get too tight of a fit, I get the fold under the bum, which is not very attractive to me. (I actually have a flat bum and average sized thighs) I am usually a 27 in all brands so I think you are right about the 28′s being too big…I am think I am wishing a bit too hard that they will fit. Sometimes so frustrating to buy when you are overseas!! (but thank goodness for your blog!) :)

Oh I know! I am from the UK myself so when I buy from the US it is tricky, returning isn’t really an option because of the shipping costs and the customs charges so I understand your trouble! Hopefully you find a 27 in them! :)

You probably heard this before but I feel like you are my denim soulmate :) Though I live in a country where I wear shorts 8/9 months out of the year, my closet is still full of pants as I am always in search of the next “perfect” pair. I will definitely be checking back to see what is on the up and up in the denim world.

Since I am new to your blog, I am not sure if you have ever reviewed AEO jeans. I find that they are an affordable way to try new trends if one is not sure about style/color (re: skinny brights and destroyed washes) and does not want to go all out on premium prices. They come in short and tall lengths, plus they ship worldwide! (I swear I don’t work for them!)

So many of us on DenimBlog live, breathe, eat and sleep denim lol :) I actually have a pair of American Eagle jeggings, my friend gave me them for my birthday and I really like them. I haven’t reviewed them though. Judging by you wearing shorts 8/9 months of a year, I know that’s safe to assume you are not English lol!

Though I love my homeland, Canada, I have to say that I am very happy to be living in warm Bermuda. It gets “cold” enough from Dec-March that my denims do get to come out of the closet for awhile though. Actually, I was shopping today and a few ladies and I in the store were wishing it would cool down a bit so we can start wearing the fall fashions – we are too spoiled sometimes :)

hi, I found a pair of coated Agnes in stealth color in size 25, since they’re all sold out everywhere.. all my jeans are size 24.. i have a jbrand 901 in hewson and starless in both 24 and I love the way they fit on me.. do you think size 25 in Agnes would be a bit loose? since coated jeans doesn’t stretch much.. I bought a jbrand 901 coated in stealh in size 24 but too tight on me.. so I wonder the sizing would be different..thanks

Hi snowball! I haven’t tried the Stealth wash in Agnes actually, but there is a good chance that if it was tight in the 901 then it would probably fit you in the Agnes in size 25. Is there an option to return them if they don’t work out? I think the Agnes look good when they are a bit loose or tight, they are quite versatile!

thank u.. well I can return it if it doesn’t work out but I really don’t like returning stuff.. I think i will get it.. what do u think of the coated turbulent clay? do I need to size down or up.? so frustrating to buy jeans online..:(

I can’t say I have tried the clay, I have the 901 in coated red though and those were true to size and stretched out quite a lot. I hope they work out for you! I know what you mean about buying jeans online though, I buy all of mine online too.
