Skinny Jeans Could be Hazardous to your Health?!

girls-denim-jeans-venice-skinny-colors.jpg

Hipster jeans gave us the ”muffin top” and five-centimetre fly, while the super-tube left unsuspecting women exposed to ”camel toe” and ”crack flash”.

Now, it’s medical - the latest trendy denims are a  proven health hazard.

Devotees of the skinny jean may be unaware that cramming their bodies into tight denim can cause nasty damage to a sensory nerve under the hip bone, leaving the wearer with a tingling or burning sensation and numbness in the thigh.

The fashion affliction, which overseas has earned the nickname  ”Calvin Klein syndrome”, is known in medical circles as Meralgia paraesthetica.

Queensland General Practice president John Kastrissios said the condition was common among women who regularly wore tight, hip-hugging jeans.

”If you wear something very tight, especially low-cut, the superficial sensory nerve of the upper thigh can get compressed,” Dr Kastrissios said.

Compression of the peripheral nerve, the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, could cause aching in the groin area and across the buttocks, he said.

”More common is the absence or impairment of feeling across the upper thigh, which can last up to six weeks,” Dr Kastrissios said.

The condition is usually not serious. In about 95 per cent of cases, symptoms will disappear without any need for medical treatment.

In rare instances, surgery may be required to decompress the nerve.

The condition was most common among slim women, whose sensory nerve was more superficial, but men were also affected, Dr Kastrissios said.

Worn by celebrity icons such as The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger and supermodel Kate Moss, skinny jeans traditionally taper to the ankle.

High-waisted styles are also in fashion.

Paula Acheson, owner of Paddington’s Petrol Boutique, said skinny jeans would continue to be women’s preferred denims, no matter the consequences.

”We would sell 10 pairs of skinny jeans to one wide-legged pair,” Ms Acheson said.

”They are definitely our highest selling item.”

University student Cassandra Peszko, 18, owns eight pairs of skinny jeans and was surprised to hear about the potential health risk.

”They are a staple item in my wardrobe,” Ms Peszko said.

”It could only be a matter of time before I can’t feel my leg.”

However, Ms Peszko, who also works as a promotional model, said she would continue to wear her favourite skinnies ”to death”.  Source

Hey - beauty is pain, right?  Why else would we wear 6 inch heels - not because they are comfortable! If you are wearing your jeans so tight that they compress a nerve, then they are maybe a little too tight.  But otherwise, long live skinnies.

7 for All Mankind opens Soho Store!

The Soho store is open now - has anyone been yet? Check out the images of the new flagship and an article about the store from New York Magazine’s August 7th edition.

“Today we weaseled our way into the new Seven for All Mankind flagship, the brand’s first New York store, set to open tomorrow. Situated in Soho at 394 West Broadway (right next to Miss Sixty — ooh, competition!), the bright, clean 3,000-square-foot space occupies the old home of Smith & Hawken. When we were wandering around inside, we spotted plenty of flares (Seven isn’t pushing the skinny jeans nowadays, it would seem) and outerwear galore, including a brown leather motorcycle jacket for men and a shimmery beige trench coat for women. The store is also home to Seven’s children’s denim and their line of leather bags, which range from $200 to $1,000.

But this isn’t just any old denim-dealer heaven: The space will also function as a revolving art gallery. Though the sprawling white walls are currently in their naked state, they will soon be overtaken by artist Tim Mantoani’s 20-by-24-inch Polaroids in the store’s first exhibit, “Behind Photographs.” Art and commerce — they definitely get the neighborhood.

New Yorkers would do well to prepare themselves for more: The denim dealers already have their eye on the Flatiron district, Upper East Side, and Upper West Side for their next three retail destinations.”

How to wear Pegged Boyfriend Jeans

rachel-bilson-boyfriend-jeans.jpg

Everyone is talking about the new boyfriend jeans look, the trendy alternative to wearing cropped jeans it seems.  Especially hot is the new line by Current/Elliott.  Rachel Bilson, above, is spotted in rolled boyfriend jeans from Current/Elliott, and below, Katie Holmes in a pair of boyfriend jeans by PRPS.  Check out the tips below on how to wear your jeans pegged and rolled.

Excerpt from the article in LATimes.com called “The Comeback: Peg-and-Roll Pants“:

Proper proportions

Before you roll, choose jeans cut straight and loose through the leg but not wide (and never M.C. Hammer baggy). Look for a men’s fit — a worn-in pair of Levi’s 501s or soft cargoes are perfect. “They should sit low on your hips,” Current says. “They should be sexy and slinky, not big, baggy weekend jeans.”

In the fold

Key to the silhouette is the tapered leg. But if you don’t have tapered jeans (and who does?) and don’t want to tailor your bottoms, you can resort to the old junior high school practice of self-tapering (”Bring it back, I love it,” squeals Current). Just hold your pant leg taut, fold a section over the ankle, then tightly roll up the whole package. Just be careful not to taper pant legs so severely they look like they’re glued to your calf.

Make it a double

“We like a very messy thin roll, rolled twice so you see a little above the ankle,” said Current. Pants should look as though they were hiked up to go wading through a stream.

Body talk

Because the silhouette sits low on the hips and is cut loose, it works on both curvy and straight bodies. But the petite or short-waisted should opt for a slightly less pegged roll, so proportions aren’t so extreme.

Top it off

Skintight men’s tank tops, oversized T-shirts, frilly blouses — rolled jeans can be worn with most anything. But the silhouette looks best when the waistband is showing — so get tucking.

The extras

Because the pants are meant to hang on the hips, a cool belt is key to keeping them in place. Stylish options include raw leather, vintage-looking belts for day and skinnier, patent leather belts for night. The boyish look also lends itself to “more feminine, statement jewelry,” Current says — anything from long strands of pearls over a Hanes T-shirt to bunches of rhinestone brooches pinned to a tuxedo jacket lapel.

On your feet

Shoes are so bold and outrageous right now, and this jean shows them off. Gladiators, ballet flats and pumps (ones that cover the vamp of the foot work especially well) are all on the menu with rolled jeans. But leave the ankle boots in the closet, or you’ll risk looking like a Keebler elf.

You can find Current/Elliott at ELuxury or ShopBop and you can find PRPS at BlueBee or eModa if you love this new look.
