Smart Girls Rock!

Let us take a moment before snarking on the fact that Vanilla Star isn’t designer denim. What they are doing is promoting positive self image for young girls, which is missing from the fashion industries for our young and impressionable tween and teenage market.  In a time when celebs like Paris Hilton are celebrated for acting like a dumb blonde, this is a refreshing change.

Vanilla Star Jeans, one of the top jean brands for kids & juniors is sending the message for back to school that “Smart Girls Rock” and that they can live whatever dreams they envision.  That is a pretty cool message – smart girls do rock!

Vanilla Star Jeans is the rising star of tween and junior labels amongst major retailers such as Macy’s, Belk, Wet Seal and JC Penney’s, just to name a few. Vanilla Star has set its sights on celebrating the positive attributes of young women by allowing them to ‘live their dream’ through the Live The Dream Scholarship, awarded annually to young women to pursue their dreams in academics, fashion, sport & entertainment.

Bringing back the pegged-up boyfriend jean

Another article on what a trendsetter Katie Holmes is with her boyfriend baggy jeans! What do you think? Is Katie the new celeb to watch for her fashion choices?

Is Katie Holmes a fashion trendsetter?

They’re called boyfriend jeans because you steal (or borrow) them from your significant other, which is precisely what celebrity trendsetter Katie Holmes did while strolling the streets of Los Angeles in her husband Tom Cruise’s favorite denims.

The trend originated in the 1950s, when working women needed something they could move around in and be comfortable. The jeans were most commonly worn with a tucked-in blouse and a colorful handkerchief wrapped around the head. We saw them emerge again in the ’80s, this time with those oh-so-terrible elastic waistbands and bloomer-like fits.

Today, there are some need-to-know basics on executing the perfect peg or cuff.

•    First and foremost, the fit should be delightfully loose, just grazing your thigh. Proportion is very important, so make sure it fits your hips loosely (and wear a great leather belt). Avoid at all costs the bloomer or diaper butt.

•    Secondly, when pegging or cuffing the leg, pull tight at the hem and use the guideline of a one- to two-inch cuff. Roll this up until it hits mid-calf. If you are petite, this is going to emphasize your small frame. But this doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Just play up your size with peep-toe heels and a cute fitted blouse. If you’re tall, try a pair of flats.

•    Third, absolutely do not roll up the cuff or peg so tightly that your calf turns purple.

Now all you need is the right pair of jeans. If your boyfriend just won’t part with his, a few of our favorite designers include the iconic Levi’s and stylists-turned-designers Current/Elliott, well known in the industry for introducing reconstructed vintage denim to mega-celebs like Nicole Richie and Mandy Moore.

Meticulous attention to detail makes their re-constructed vintage jeans something special, even historical. Plus, the denim is super-worn-in by what they call a love wash. Check out their ultra-feminine pieces at Singer22.com.

If shopping on the web makes your eyes twitch, there’s always Lucky Brand, which has been pumping out solid denim pieces for years.

All in all, this is a fashion trend to get behind.

Levi’s Exposes Our Little White Lies

Levi's Capital E Matchstick Skinny Jeans in Dark Worn

In a new ad campaign for Levi’s 501 jeans, a man and a woman slowly make their way up a darkened stairwell, simultaneously unbuttoning their jeans and debunking a series of little white lies they’ve apparently been telling each other all evening.

He’s not really in a band. She doesn’t really work for a label. And so on, until the woman finally admits, “This isn’t really my apartment.” At that point, the guy looks briefly at a series of family photos that are clearly not hers, before they solve that particular problem by turning out the lights.

Of course, there are those who will disavow “Secrets and Lies” for promoting sex with strangers, and perhaps, lying. But seen another way, the ad isn’t just entertaining; it’s also uplifting.

For one thing, the couple in question is ‘fessing up to their transgressions of truth, and before doing the deed, no less. For another, it’s a light-hearted way of poking fun at the type of thing that likely goes on in a bar in every city, every night of the week.

The ad also is in keeping with the funny yet sexy feel that 501 jeans commercials have been known for since at least the mid-1980s, when it aired its infamous, and still memorable, Laundromat commercial. (Last year, Levi’s also turned heads with a 501 commercial with two possible endings, one featuring a gay couple and the other a straight couple.)Even if “Secrets and Lies” offends some, chances are Levi’s will think it’s worth the risk. The onslaught of pricey, trendy denim over the past few years has left Levi’s vulnerable to having its jeans relegated to the racks where all the basic but boring clothes live. By taking risks with edgy commercials, the company gives itself a shot at staying relevant.

“Secrets and Lies” is part of a series of new spots that also includes “First Time,” in which a young man and woman flirtatiously banter about doing something that at least one of them has never done before. Needless to say, it’s not what you think.

Celebs in Denim: Pamela Anderson in J Brand White Skinnies

 pamela-anderson-jbrand-pencil.jpg

Pamela Anderson was spotted out shopping and wearing J Brand 12″ Pencil Jeans in White while in Sydney, Australia. I think these look really great on Pam – she still looks amazing at 40 years old! She seems to be reclaiming her fame as the first celeb to be spotted in J Brand by wearing them lots lately.  It’s a good thing – better she find new fame looking hot in denim than in her new reality show, which is terrible, has anyone seen it?
