Yves Saint Laurent dies at age 71.

Yves Saint Laurent, one of the greatest fashion designers in history, died at his home in Paris late Sunday at 71 of brain cancer. The French designer helped define modern fashion and cemented Paris’s status as fashion capital. His signature contributions to fashion included but were not limited to designer denim and the launch of a his fragrance line and beauty business.

Yves is known for the following quote: “I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans: the most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes.”

No wonder we love our denim so much – he states the reason perfectly and eloquently.

The Gucci Group, which acquired the Yves Saint Laurent fashion housein 1999, said the designer’s death “leaves a great emptiness but also a sublime inheritance.” Read the full story of what other designers are saying about YSL’s passing at WWD.com. He will be missed.

Admittedly, I am a cheapskate about my denim. I only buy it on sale or I try to find the pair I want on Ebay after I’ve tried it on in the department store. I can’t help it – I have a love for all things expensive but don’t have the budget to buy those things at retail! The only time I’ve ever paid full retail for my jeans – twice – was for both pairs of my Diesel Lowky B.C. jeans that I adore, and wear 90% of the time, I bought at full retail price in the Diesel boutique. They are my favorite go-to wear them anywhere, everywhere, jeans.

Now BOTH of my favorite styles are on sale at Nordstrom, grr! Nordstrom is having a killer denim sale right now. Oh well – if you haven’t tried these, the fit is fabulous – they are a classic bootcut with my two favorite classic washes! Scoop them up at between $99 – $109 at Nordie’s now and check out their other denim on sale too!

P.S. The flare is not quite as wide as it looks on the model!
