Sears Signs LL Cool J to do Apparel Brand - including denim!

ll-cool-j-jeans2.jpg

When will it stop?  Why do celebs think they can design clothes?  *Sigh*  Excerpts from the full article, available on WWD.com.

As for what LL Cool J knows about women’s apparel, the hip-hop artist insists he’s had plenty of experience. “I was raised by a matriarch, I have a wife and three daughters, so I know what women are looking for when they shop for clothes,” he said. “My main concern with juniors is to make sure the fit is right. The fabrics have to feel nice on a woman’s body, but sizing and fit are very important. I know that if she comes in, puts it on and it doesn’t fit, she won’t come back. Clothes have to make a woman feel good, relaxed and sexy. We are going to be constantly looking at fine-tuning the fit and we’ll get it right.”

The collection will retail on the higher end of its mix in juniors — from $22 for a graphic T-shirt to $50 for a pair of jeans. Evidence of LL Cool J’s involvement is evident throughout — from an embroidered tattoo on the back of a jacket to song lyrics printed on a T-shirt.

“Tough economic times create evolution and we are going to take the steps to develop and make us right for our customers,” Neger said.

“We are going to take a lot more risks in juniors,” he said. “It’s all about style, quality and value in juniors and we plan to move quickly, reacting to the trends and constantly have new merchandise on the floor.”

If the brand is well received, it would be a much-needed boost for Sears after a tough year financially. The firm’s fiscal 2007 financial performance fell below expectations and Sears Holdings emerged from the holiday season with excess inventory, particularly in apparel, leading to costly markdowns.

“I have always had a hand in fashion in some capacity [as the face of brands such as Kangol and Fubu], but I have never embraced a brand the way I will embrace this,” LL Cool J said. “The LL Cool J name is a brand I have been building for 25 years and I didn’t want to do this line with just any store.”

“It’s all about making the great life attainable,” LL Cool J said.

And I laugh out loud.  It seems to me that the burner hasn’t been on in his career for a great while now! Bite now while someone’s paying LL!

What do you think of the new LL Cool J’s new line?  Will it sell - is LL even relevant any longer in the hip hop community?

Are the days of expensive designer jeans numbered?

dvb-worn.jpg

We’ve blogged in the past about how Posh’s dVb line has been relegated to fashion’s basement. The now not-so-posh have been marked down to $30-$60 at discount retailers.  Many of our readers agree, the dVb line’s quality is not as good as other high end denim brands out there, and the materials feel cheap.

Will the economic crisis in the U.S. have an impact on these top-dollar goods such as designer jeans?  I don’t think the days of QUALITY designer denim are numbered, only cheaply produced denim, like Victoria’s dVb brand need worry. Basing all of this on dVb’s faltering success would be very presumptuous to assume all designer denim will end up the same way.  Quality will always demand and usually receive what it’s worth. If it feels cheap, it probably is and that’s what I think the problem is here.

Will the U.S. lingering recession take down the prices on all premium designer denim lines or is it really a quality issue?  Have you cut your spending on premium denim due to the economy being depressed?

Celebs in Denim: Melanie Griffith in Rock & Republic and Sharon Stone in Blue 2

sharon-stone-and-melanie-griffith.jpg

Just because you’re a slightly older celeb doesn’t mean you have to wear mom jeans! Here are actresses Melanie Griffith and Sharon Stone shopping on Robertson Blvd recently, both sporting their designer jeans. Melanie is wearing a pair of Rock and Republic’s and Sharon is sporting a pair of Blue2’s.  I find it hilarious that Melanie is trying on dresses over her clothes…  Hey Mel, ever hear of these newfangled things called fitting rooms?!

Paige Premium Denim teams up with Ron Herman

Exclusive breaking news from Paige Premium Denim!

Southern California retailer, Ron Herman and LA-based denim brand Paige Premium Denim are joining forces for a new vintage inspired range of all-American blues. “This is going to be a return to basics for Paige Premium Denim,” says designer Paige Adams-Geller. “We started out in Ron Herman stores with our classic styles and are thrilled to be re-teaming with them on a special venture.”

With a shared focus on classic, California cool Paige created a line of signature jeans that echoes the Ron Herman philosophy and expands on her own fit conscious designs. Together they chose the signature Laurel Canyon jean for the exclusive – a classic, 5 pocket boot cut that has been Paige’s most notable piece to date.

Updated in two new 70’s inspired washes, the Laurel Canyon takes on a more weathered, vintage shape adored by Nicole Richie, Kate Hudson, Giselle Bundchen and more. Beachwood Canyon (shown below), named after one of Hollywood’s most star studded neighborhoods is a light, ultra soft denim with knee gracing rips and tears. The darker, more indigo wash, Nichols Canyon, offers the same destruction with a dressier edge.

Available this Memorial Day, Paige Denim exclusively for Ron Herman will be available at all Ron Herman locations in Southern California.

Founded in 2004 by fit model turned denim designer, Paige Adams-Geller, Paige Premium Denim focuses on fit, fabric and finish. Visit www.paigepremiumdenim.com for styles. “

Ooooh can’t wait for these - someone pick me up a pair at a Ron Herman in So. Co.!  I love that the wash is lighter, but not too light, just broken in - and the fit looks amazing!  Do you love them?

Celebs in Denim: Alanis Morissette in J Brand

alanis-morrisette-j-brand.jpg

Singer and actress Alanis Morissette was recently featured in the May 2008 Venice Magazine wearing a pair of  J Brand Lovestory jeans.  Love her!  She’s got such a natural beauty about her.

On another note, I tried on the Lovestory in the Ink wash today at Saks Fifth Avenue.  Oh My GOSH!  These things are AMAZING.  If you haven’t tried on a pair yet, you must - seriously!  They are super slimming and make even my flat booty look good!  There are no fancy logos on the back pockets, they just fit like a dream.  My only complaint - pleeeeease J Brand, come out with these in shorter inseams!  I can’t wait a whole week for Saks to hem mine, I want instant gratification!  *Sigh*

Celebs in Denim: Nicole Richie in Paige Premium Denim

nicole-richie-paige-jeans2.jpg

Nicole Richie’s latest obsession is Paige Premium Denim. Nicole has been a fan since Paige’s launch in 2004 – picking up numerous pairs of the signature Laurel Canyon Boot Cut jean.  Our sources at Paige tell us that since the birth of daughter Harlow, Nicole has ordered 10 more pairs and has already been spotted out in them four times.  Here she is out taking a walk with the baby and her baby daddy, Joel Madden.
