New 7 for All Mankind ad campaign

Check out these new 7 for All Mankind ads from the March edition of Vogue.  Do you think the fact that many denim brands are now advertising in fashion magazines means they are hurting?  Just a thought - in the past, brands like Seven and True Religion were household names among denim fashionistas, but they never had to advertise…

The ads are nicely done, with the exception of the first one - which screams mom jeans just a little - don’t you think? Its the combination of the high waist, the front pockets/pleats, the 80’s looking belt, and the denim vest.  It’s just too much at once.  The other two are nicely done - outfits that work.

New Rock & Republic Styles - and CROWNS ARE BACK!

What do we think about the NEW Rock & Republic Kasandra Crown jeans, just released (pictured below), exclusively for ELuxury? They are making quite a stir among our HonestForum members who are whipping out their credit cards as we speak.

There’s also the R&R Crowns in the Bronze wash - which is too bronze for me personally which came out a few months ago.

Also, LOVE the new Rock & Republic Fallon Shorts! So cute for summer!

And last but not least, my personal fave of the new Rock & Republic styles, the Halen Slim Bootcut in Stranded Wire wash. Very rock n’ roll, but wow - are Rocks getting more expensive or is it just us? $341 for these babies! Why are they so much higher than other styles that are in the $250 range?

First William Rast, now Givenchy: Eau de Timberlake?

justin-timberlake-eau-de-timberlake.jpg

Normally, most celebrity fragrances (and denim lines from celebs too!) go the way of the TJ Maxx clearance bin shortly after being introducedBut with Justin Timberlake’s success with his denim line, William Rast, and his new partnership with Givenchy, maybe his new venture will succeed.  Mr. Timberlake is said to be the new face of Givenchy’s new line but it isn’t exactly clear whether the fragrance will carry his name or not…Eau de Timberlake perhaps?

It’s dollars and scents for Justin Timberlake. The full-time pop star, part-time clothing designer and occasional actor inked a deal last week to be the face of Parfums Givenchy’s new men’s fragrance, set to launch in the autumn.

The deal should raise the cachet and earnings of the stylish star, who raked in $20 million last year, placing him 34th on Forbes’ list of the 100 Most Powerful Celebrities.

How much will Timberlake earn from smiling for the cameras? LVMH, which owns Givenchy, hasn’t disclosed the terms of their deal.

However, a number of top-rank celebrities have earned over $10 million for signing on as a spokesmodel. Angelina Jolie took home a reported $12 million in a three-year-deal with clothing label St. John, while Gwyneth Paltrow reportedly earns $3 million per year shilling for Estée Lauder.

Celebs in Denim: Ellen Page in J Brand Cigarette Leg Jeans

ellen-page-juno-jbrand.jpg

Oscar nominee and star of the hit movie Juno, Ellen Page was spotted wearing a pair of J Brand 944 cigarette leg jeans in Jett while attending the 2008 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Juno won for best picture and best actress for Ellen Page, the young Halifax actress who’s wowed Hollywood with her spirited lead performance in the teen pregnancy movie.  Page, who just turned 21, beat out Hollywood heavyweights Angelina Jolie and Parker Posey, among other more experienced actresses, for her turn as a feisty 16-year-old who finds herself knocked up by her best friend.

Editor’s Note:  If you haven’t seen Juno yet, put it on your must-see list - it was excellently done.  Props to Ellen!

Celebs in Denim: Colin Farrell in True Religion

Spotted yesterday - Colin Farrell in what appear to be a pair of True Religion Joeys:

Colin Farrell was feeling gray from his fedora to his vest as he landed in London yesterday. The cigarette hanging out of his mouth is not attractive, but we’ll give him a bye after reading his sweet quote in a recent interview about helping to take on Heath Ledger’s role in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. When asked about the part he will share with Johnny Depp and Jude Law, Colin said,

“It makes me feel uncomfortable to think about it too much and to get into it really here but it’s an incredibly painful honor to have, you know, and an honor I wish wasn’t bestowed but an honor nonetheless. It’s about getting Heath’s work out there, get his work out there, he’s too good for any of his work not to be seen, you know, and I’m really keen and looking forward to doing it and just doing the best job I can do.”

Even bad boy Colin can be humbled from time to time, and it sounds like he’s ready to give the film all he can to do justice to Heath’s memory.”

Life after jeans: Are denim’s days numbered?

7-for-all-mankind-dress.jpg

Lately we’ve been discussing how brands like 7 for All Mankind and Rock & Republic are expanding beyond denim. According to the following article, the reason for the expansion is because the days of designer denim are numbered.

U.S. jean sales are virtually flat. Between November 2005 and November 2006, Americans bought $15.7 billion worth, according to the NPD Group, a Port Washington, N.Y.-based market research company. But in 2007, denim lovers spent just over $15.8 billion, a slight .6% increase.

What to Wear When You Don’t Wear Jeans

What does that mean for the companies who built their brands on distressed pockets and stone washes, often charging hundreds per pair? Robert Cordero, style editor at JCReport.com, a bimonthly online newsletter on emerging fashion trends, says because of the lower demand for denim, labels like True Religion, Rag & Bone and Seven For All Mankind are getting creative with their collections.

“Several years ago, consumers could not get enough of premium jeans,” he says. “Today, however, the market isn’t as strong. Denim labels are expanding beyond their bread-and-butter products to include other categories such as dresses, accessories, knits and jackets.”

Those alternatives provide the same comfortable, casual look as denim but with a fresher, timelier feel, says Allison Berlin, founder of New York City-based personal shopping service Style Made Simple.

This winter, she says, it’s OK for guys to have a little more fun with their bottom half than standard denim allows.

For casual days, cargo pants are back.

“This time, the cargo pant is dressed up,” she says. “It’s not like your worn-out pair from Old Navy.”

Denim seller Rag & Bone, who expanded its line in 2006 to include men’s and women’s ready-to-wear clothing and accessories, showed a dark mushroom-colored pair on the Spring 2008 runway. Unlike mass-market styles, these pants are made with super fine twill and cut trim for a sleeker look.

Dressier occasions call for proper trousers but they don’t have to be too proper. Anything-but-understated pant styles in chalk stripes, tweeds and checks will make looking cool a little more fun than a straight leg, flat wash jean could.

Designer Tim Hamilton’s baggy trousers easily combine comfort and style with a button fly, watch pocket and side pocket, as well as adjustable straps at the waist. These look good paired with deck shoes, Converse sneakers or for a more conservative take, lace-up dress shoes.

For women, the hands-down replacement for denim is the dress.

“Part of the appeal is that a dress is an instant outfit,” says Berlin. “It’s easier to slip on in the morning,” says Berlin.

She suggests pairing a simple shift with opaque tights and flat boots for a day-to-evening look. Designer denim brand Seven For All Mankind, which has branched out into skirts, slacks and yes, dresses, makes a 100% cotton, dove-gray dress with a loose, forgiving silhouette that’s perfect for running weekend errands. It can also be dressed up over a turtleneck and tights for work. There are even discreet pockets on the hips in which to store your keys and wallet, just like your favorite pair of jeans. (DenimBlog Editor’s Note: Do we like this dress, pictured above? I’ll keep my jeans, thanks very much, if this shapeless thing is the alternative.)

Still stuck on denim? Not to worry. “It’ll always be around,” says Berlin. “Right now, there’s just something else more interesting to wear.”

Can anything really flatter the booty as well as a nice fitting pair of denim in a gorgeous wash? We don’t think so.

Is denim ever going to go out of style?
